Hollywood mega star Mel Gibson is considering buying a Fijian island.
The Australian Herald Sun paper reports that the Aussie-raised Gibson had been flown by helicopter to Mago Island which is on the market.
The Fiji Times reported first on Gibson's foray into island adventure. No doubt Mel is looking for a place as far away as possible from Hollywood's p.c. crowd.
Gibson could not be contacted for comment and was said to be staying with his family on an estate nearby.
Mago Island's asking price is $19 million.
It was described as having pristine ecology and terrain, rises to 500 feet on its eastern cliffs and fringed entirely by reefs, powder white beaches and turquoise lagoons.

He may well have that in mind. I am sure he will build a traditional Catholic Chapel there. Regardless of his plans for the needs and desires of himslef and his family, I am sure that he may at the very least want to have it as a "Catholic colony"........or retreat center, perhaps?

A refuge for the remnant to escape into the wilderness... as in prophecy... Perhaps. He's certainly earned it.

"seriuously, is that only $19 million, to buy that? That seems like a steal "
It's probably two million a year in taxes and maintenance, conservatively. He has thirty five people, school, etc. to support. The only way to make it pay would be to build an ultra exclusive resort on it and hire top end management.
I would guess that at minimum he will have to spend 30-50 million more on it to put it in the black. Construction on such a remote island is going to be mega expensive, as is anything else that has to be imported, which is everything.
The sales price is relatively inexpensive because only the super super rich can afford the maintenance, and there are not that many who are super rich. It is a huge project.

Just returned from a 3 hr. car ride and have been pondering it also.
Not only would there have to be a school, but also a doctor and medical clinic, A ship to provision the island, a runway with hanger and staffed maintenance facility, power generation , engineering shop with workers in in metal, wood and mechanical.
I like your idea about a resort.

One question: taxes???? To whom - or what? Is this island part of a nation/confederation? Or is it independant?
Is this island technically part of the UK?

Wouldn't it be great if he'd remake "The Ten Commandments"? Now that CG graphics are so wonderful?

My Mel Movie Wish List:
1. Sampson and Delilah
2. King David
3. Story of Danial and the other prophets
4. The story of Christ From Birth till return to Jerusalem.
Mel if you made these with the same quality and truth you made the passion you will make millions very happy.

It's part of Fiji. I don't know what the tax situation is. They might have some special development deal which suspends taxes for new construction. If they don't, that would go a long way towards explaining why the island doesn't cost more. It is a money loser now even without property taxes.
