Jason Giambi admitted taking steroids (injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003')
SF Chronicle ^ | 12/1/04 | Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams

New York Yankees star Jason Giambi told a federal grand jury that he had injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003 baseball season and had started using steroids at least two years earlier, The Chronicle has learned.

Giambi has publicly denied using performance-enhancing drugs, but his Dec. 11, 2003, testimony in the BALCO steroids case contradicts those statements, according to a transcript of the grand jury proceedings reviewed by The Chronicle.

The onetime Oakland A's first baseman and 2000 American League Most Valuable Player testified that in 2003, when he hit 41 home runs for the Yankees, he had used several different steroids obtained from Greg Anderson, weight trainer for San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds.

In his testimony, Giambi described how he had used syringes to inject human growth hormone into his stomach and testosterone into his buttocks. Giambi also said he had taken "undetectable" steroids known as "the clear" and "the cream" -- one a liquid administered by placing a few drops under the tongue, the other a testosterone-based balm rubbed onto the body.

The 33-year-old Yankee said Anderson had provided him with all of the drugs except for human growth hormone, which he said he had obtained at a Las Vegas gym. Anderson also provided him syringes, Giambi said.

Agent Arn Tellem, who accompanied Giambi and his younger brother, Jeremy, to the grand jury, did not return calls seeking comment. Other efforts to reach the Giambis were unsuccessful.

As a Yankee fan, I can't say I'm shocked about this, but I'm disgusted. And the Yankees still owe him $82 million over the last four years. I wish Jason would just retire now.

well gee that really casts a pall over Barry Bonds now doesnt it?

at least he told the truth to teh jury if no one else. The funny part is, he wasnt taking them last year and look what happened. He came in heavier, slower and ended up with a tumor on his pituitary gland (and really looked like the walking dead for a while)....

makes you wonder....

If you saw a picture of this guy when he was a rookie, you'd laugh at this "confession".

He looked like Don Knotts.

I know that there are many negative side effects from steroids, but does synthetic HGH also have such consequences?

Isn't HGH the first genetically engineered (by Genetech) commercially produced drug?

They used to synthesize HGH from the brains of cadavers, and therefore, some people who used it actually contracted Creutzfeld Jacobs disease or new variant (like BSE).

Does anybody know more about HGH? I've heard that it is a 'safe' performance enhancer. It also reverses some of the effects of aging (such as grey hair, body fat...etc.)

Hey, look on the bright side, one look at Giambi twitching in the dugout and no kid will ever want to take steroids again!

HGH was synthesized by Eli Lilly, and is produced by genetically odified e coli bacteria.

I have taken Lilly Humatrope HGH (and some Korean-made LG called Eutropin) for over two years. It is free of any contaminant that can cause spongiform encephalopathy.

I have to tell you that I am still bald, my hair is grey, and my body fat, while reduced is still with me, is reduced in quantity.

What I can say for sure is that my IGF-1 levels are normal now, not virtually non-existent as they were, and my energy level is much improved.

I plan on continuing to take injectible HGH for as long as I live.

They should put a microphone in Sammy Sosa's face for some funny quotes about his steroid use and last year's bad performance.

Nah. Everbyody he knows in pro ball takes them, and they got them from his trainer, but I'm sure Barry's clean.

McGuire, Bonds and the rest are frauds. They should be stripped of any records they hold.

I've given up on baseball. There's too much scoring due to juiced baseballs and juiced baseball players. The records that have set in the last ten years are a joke and have destroyed the game for me. For me, part of baseball's charm was it's connection to it's past. That connection was broken with chemistry players of the past ten years.

Now I watch NASCAR in the summer.

I don't think he looked heavier, but when I saw him in training camp I was like "What the f@#%! Where the hell did he go?" All his muscle mass dissappeared. If anyone didn't realize it back then, then they should be at the optometrist getting their eyes checked.

I wouldn't bet on that. I'm sure George has his lawyers looking that contract over right now. I bet Giambi isn't back, and he doesn't get paid.

Think Aaron Boone... The Yankees were very patient with Giambi all last year. They even carried his useless carcass on the postseason roster, when there was no chance he could produce. All the while, Giambi was lying to them about the nature of his condition and the reasons for it.

The Boss' patience is at an end.

Yuck!

What is happening to society? It seems like every other pro athlete is either taking drugs or committing other crimes, and it seems like every other woman out there is getting ridiculous beach-ball breast implants or plastic surgery. Is this just another Clinton legacy in which dishonest people do everything they can to appear differently than they really are?

I agree.

The league should put an asterisk * next to the Yankees 2003 AL championship as well as Bond's home run records. Balco boy hit two solo dingers early off Pedro during Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS.

Do they die on the warning track without the juice?

Pardon me...

You sir, have insulted ALL "useless carcasses" by comparing them to Giambi.
