I'd appreciate any and all help from the smartest people in the world. (Afterall, it was y'al; who steered me to Firefox a few months ago, anyway.)

Happened to me a few days ago.
Ran Norton anti-virus and 1 button checkup, rebooted and it was fine.

No solution but I just learned that:

press control + "b" will give you a bookmarks sidebar

press control + "h" will give you a history sidebar

That happens to me when I manage to fire up Mozilla or Firefox twice by mistake. If you're running Linux, do a "ps -A | grep firefox"; if you're running Windows NT, 2000, or XP, fire up the Task Manager and look to see whether Firefox is already running--maybe you minimized it and forgot about it?

Uh-oh, bb; now you stepped in it... re-start the machine and mix another adult beverage. You'll feel lots better in the morning.

By any chance did you have Netscape Navigator or Mail open at the time? I personnaly have given up on FireFox. Netscape has the ability to right-click on a link and select "Open In New Tab", I love that feature and it is something that FireFox is lacking. I also used Mozilla at work and I had to create two different profiles.
