The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thread two! We filled up the last one (The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread) with lots of horse talk... time to rotate pastures!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Thanks.... The thread doesn't have a lot of momentum yet, huh! -- a lot of our posters are off riding, and one is away for a wedding this weekend.

Myself, I don't have a lot of news yet.... still drinking coffee.

The FR Saddle Club needs a picture of two mules grazing about a "Bush-Cheney" banner. I'd do it, but I am a bit far from two mules that I know.

I do know one old mule I may see today, but he's retired and he doesn't travel much anymore.

I wonder if he could be persuaded, with a carrot of course, to pose beside a cardboard "Bush/Cheney" sign?

Unfortunately, I am not going to be seeing "Hoagie" the mule today after all. Soon, though. He has such a great face, I want to photograph him.

Pictures from the freshly brush-hawgged back 'forty'....

This is the area we seeded today with a pasture and clover mix. It still looks a little rough, but it ain't a lawn, and we can pick up sticks till the cows come home. Next spring, we can get it better ~and~ not be working in the mud.

I left ecurbh holding the bag.

Pony watching from the under the apple tree, which, ironically, is still there.

We like this spidery tree. It's Hazelnut, but I keep insisting on calling it Nutmeg.

Horses got put back out in the front now while the seed grows.

This is the brush pile to be burned.

He has such a great face.

Mules are charming (?), aren't they?! I have rode a few, but mostly packed them and led them into cow camps in the mountains. One of the ranchers jacks was named "Jake the Snake". He would not be led. He was let to find his own trail in his own time. One might catch a glimpse of him on the trail, but he generally kept out of sight until camp. He was always there waiting. He never failed to show up, he never lost his load. If only his human metaphors were as honest and reliable as Jake. Jake would've voted for Bush.

They are great. My friend's mule was a great riding mule for him and a great companion.

I spent 9 days in the Arizona mountains on a mule.

I wish I had a picture of the pack string.... He let them all follow loose also, their mother was his lead horse and they weren't going far.
