Enigmatic circular stone formations reminiscent of those in Europe are found on remote hilltops and valleys throughout Saudi Arabia. The rings are 5 to 100 meters in diameter and are surrounded by stone walls a foot or two tall. Some of the rings have "tails" that stretch out for hundreds of meters. From the air, the patterns have a striking resemblance to designs etched in Peru's Nazca plateau. Little is known about the circles and virtually nothing about their purpose.

Very interesting!
Perhaps ancient people had a lot of time on their hands...
Or maybe the men courted the women by dragging and carrying big stones to make them pretty pictures in the earth.
Or possibly conservative aliens came to the planet and put the lazy liberal natives to work before realizing that liberals were good for nothing and they left... but not before releasing a genetic modifier to inject the natives with a little bit of conservatism.
"Or maybe the men courted the women by dragging and carrying big stones to make them pretty pictures in the earth. "
that goes hand in hand with my theory that men invented civilaztion to impress chicks. :)
Or maybe that is just me.
(According to DH, it is just me. Maybe I'll bring up stone circles as my defense - "look honey, every civilization does it!")
Or maybe it was the women: "Honey, don't you think this rock would look better over here?"
Or maybe, "Sweetheart! Darling! 100 meter circles are just TOO SMALL, My Love, for our children to reach their full potential in life. You agree, Precious, dont you!"
ROTF!
Are there any depictions of stone circles in heiroglyphs? (sp?)
Imitating coments?
Make that comets.
Grog didn't care about impressing chicks, he just took what he wanted.
The little nerds in the tribe didn't care about impressing chicks either,
but formed alliances in an effort to force Grog to let them have
access to the chicks too.
These alliances created rules for the distribution of chicks among it's members.
Eventually these allied nerds coined the phrase "civilized" to describe their system of getting chicks.
In conclusion, civilization was invented to keep Grog from crushing their nerdy heads for messing with his chicks.
Arabs have no brook with preislamic sites, especially the perverted wahhabs, who even destroy islamic shrines and graves that are "idolatrous" in their warped eyes.
I can find very little about these stone circles in Saudi. I wonder if these are actually the tops of walls that are just starting to be uncovered as the sands shift.
Please add me to the list.
Not that I know of. Hieroglyphs began in Egypt quite a while back, but the oldest surviving examples aren't long texts. Operative word there is "surviving" -- Egypt's population has lived in the flood plain of the Nile time out of mind, and those floods turn mud brick back to mud. In recent years I read that some outlines of ancient Memphis (which really was right on the river) were discerned using, oh, I forget -- ground penetrating radar, or satellite photography -- but that there's a distinct lack of artifacts found in test excavations carried out to study the ancient city.
It wouldn't be surprising if there was little left in Egypt since the empire fell apart over a period of time and people would have had time to grab anything useful. Babylon fell abruptly and the place would have been more or less deserted for long enough that the small pieces the army didn't want would be buried by the dust. Rome fell slowly and had time to move to Byzantium, but then Constantinople fell abruptly and everything was destroyed or looted. Kind of makes one wonder what will happen to America.
