Pit Bull Attacks Baby, Is Thrown Off Roof

NEW YORK -- A pit bull attacked and bit a 3-month-old baby at a Brooklyn apartment building on Sunday before a man threw the dog off the roof to its death, witnesses said.

The attack, which seriously injured the baby, occurred around 5 p.m., when a woman took the baby to visit friends at an apartment in the building.

"The dog got jealous and started jumping for the baby," witness Emmanuel Santiago said. "It caught the baby in the head."

A man grabbed the baby and put it on a bed, but the dog, one of four in the apartment, kept attacking, Santiago said. The dog then chased the man to the building's roof and bit him.

"When he bit him on the arm, the kid threw the dog off the roof," Santiago said. "And the dog landed dead."

The dog fell about six stories.

The dog's owner, Reina Lopez, was arrested and was charged with reckless endangerment, police said. She was in police custody, and there was no telephone number listed for her.

The baby was in serious but stable condition at a hospital. The 23-year-old man who was bitten was stable, police said. Police removed the other dogs -- to the relief of frightened neighbors.

"It's very unsafe," building resident Naomi Campbell said. "Especially if you don't have them contained."

I don't care what anyone says. Pit Bulls are killers by nature and canNOT be tamed. Owning one is an invitation to disaster.

People in cities do not need big dangerous dogs.

Guns are much safer than these dangerous dogs, A gun nver gets jealous and goes off killing kids.

One less worthless mutt.

Pitt bulls are the shi'ite muslims of the pet world. One can only exult in the ending. The "off-the-roof" toss is by far the best ending to one of these face-manglings of toddlers that I personally have ever heard of.

I happen to agree. Pit Bulls are aimed and loaded guns.

Not true, the problem is that these dogs are TRAINED to kill, not born to kill. A properly-trained Staffordshire Terrier is as well-behaved as a German Shepherd.

Any large dog can be potentially dangerous if not properly trained and handled by somebody who knows what he or she is doing.

Unfortunately, it seems there is an unhealthy attraction for pit bulls by individuals of low responsibility and even lower intellect.

Pit Bulls were bred to fight other dogs in a brutal "sport" called dog-fighting, and have an abormally high tolerance to pain and extremely strong jaws, which makes them potentially far more dangerous than even larger dogs.

However, Teddy Roosevelt had a pit bull, and so did "Buster Brown" And pit bulls - actually Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and Bull Terriers can be trustworthy, gentle and make fine pets in the hands of individuals with common sense and a basic knowledge of dog behavior and training.

But too many of these dogs wind up being bred from poor stock and handled by even poorer human stock - drug pushers, and guys who think owning a big uncontrollable animal somehow is a positive reflection on their masculinity.

The owner of this dog should do time.

The real villain here is the idiot who owned this creature and obviously failed to properly train it, or the other idiot who bred it from poor stock.

Happy landings, stupid mutt. I have to wonder about bringing a baby into a place where a pit bull is loose. That does not make sense. Most dogs will protect babies in their own households, but I would never trust pit bull with a strange child. I agree that guns are far safer than an attack dog.

Who cares about that dog. In Miami they're banned after attacking so many people years ago. I'm praying for the baby.

This past weekend, I witnessed the not an attack or act of aggressiveness by these dogs, but a pathetic and sad example of the breed. The dog was being "walked" by the owners at a rest stop. I say "walked" because the dog barely had enough strength in the hind legs to stay upright. The hind legs were obviously too thin and bowed in almost like ricketts. It should have been put down soon after birth.
Another fine example of Pit Bull breeding and those that breed them.

"Unfortunately, it seems there is an unhealthy attraction for pit bulls by individuals of low responsibility and even lower intellect."

This is the real problem. People who own pit bulls like them because of their reputation as fighters. People who own them enjoy being thought of as fighters as well. What it really says about them, is that they are stupid and mean.

BS!!!! My neighbor had a "Staffordshire Terrier" who was raised from a pup in a household with kids, etc. She was reasonable MOST of the time. When she would go nuts, she would chew THRU the door to the back yard or the front door or the WALL to get outside. I lived next door, and there was no one in her yard or harrassing her when she did this stunt. I saw her do it more than once. The back doors got replaced 3 times that I know of, and also the front door at least once. There was something very screwy about that dog, and I never fully trusted her, yet she had been raised from a pup with me in and out of that house for her entire life. I have had dogs all my life and will NEVER choose one with any pit bull in it.

Isn't it funny that the guy who threw the dog off the roof isn't being charged with animal cruelty.

Not one peep from PETA or any pagan animal worshiping group about it so far.

My next door neighbor's black lab did the exact same thing. Would occasionally go nuts and chew through doors, gates, walls, etc. He even chewed through my back door once and I mean all the way through!

Way back in the day we heard all the same stories about the breed du jour: GSD, Chows, Dobies, etc. It's the training more than anything.

i'm sure the dog "got jealous" and just started attacking. there's obviously more to the story than that.

anyone who's CLOSED MINDED and OBLIVIOUS enough to make a statement such as "pit bulls are killers by nature and can't be tamed" has about as much common sense as a rock.
