Cell phone story
May 18, 2004 | self / vanity

Posted on 05/18/2004 9:23:54 AM PDT by The Other Harry

I am no fan of cell phones. I know some people need them for one reason or another, but I still don't like them. I especially don't like them when they are used in restaurants.

One of the things I say to myself when I see a compulsive cell phone user -- and there are many -- is: "Some people can't even go to bathroom without being on their cell phone." (What I actually say to myself is a fair amount more crude than that.)

Well, I was proved right about that yesterday afternoon.

My dog and I were at the park. They have those typical porta-potti units which they set out in spring. I think they're disgusting, but they do serve a purpose. In my mind, it's get in and get out as quickly as possible.

We watched as some girl went into one while talking on her cell phone.

For over 20 years.

Why is it that the good ones are all already taken? It reminds me of a junior high school dance (which I failed to attend due to reasons which still cause me guilt). ;)

The last girl I tried to flirt with on here was also married. It does not seem fair. I told her that the only reason I could think that she would be married was that there must be no God. That was only about half a joke.

Then again, we don't need any more troubles in River City. There are enough as it is.

I work as a cashier at a retail job part time. I sometimes have customers talking on their cell phone at my register which makes it difficult for me to conduct my business if I need information from them.

I don't see it as amusing. I don't want to be in line behind that person. But that happens more and more often.

It's very rude.

I know, but in retail I'm expected (by my bosses and the customers) to be polite to everyone, rude or not. Some days I just don't get paid enough.

[batting eyes] Kind sir I am truly honored. I do believe this is the first time I've been flirted with on-line. Don't give up hope, there is someone out there who's single, is just as turned off about bad cell phone etiquette and will convince you that there really is a God. In the mean time here's a photo of me, my husband won't mind.

Understandable, cell phones are used by sophisticated, educated, enlightened, intelligent people that are better than you. You don't need one.

Just kidding!
I hate it when people used them on buses, or restaurant and have loud conversations that everyone can't help hearing. Oh, of course I have one but it's the only phone I have because, see above.

I do own a cell phone but I use it only for emergencies or road trips. I think we should all start carrying water pistols and take out the offending chatterers.

Yepper! Also my bidniz like today, when some fat broad in a junker (yeah, was she insured?) almost plowed into me as I approached a main road - she was palming the wheel with one hand wiht a cell phone in the other. Came all the way into my lane. If I'd been 2 seconds earlier...

Most people don't go out of their way to be rude

I agree, but there are many boorish, inconsiderate, thoughtless morons out there.

We might be able to make a trade here. About 24 hours before our wedding, my ex- suddenly turned into the most vicious pesron I've ever met. If she hadn't been pregnant, I would have called it off.

I could say more, but it would be improper on a public forum. Let's just say that I'm not sure which one of us would be getting the short end of that deal.

She does have a pretty nice body -- but so does a rattlesnake. She also has most of what used to be my money. If you can manage to squeeze it out her, more power to you!

As a bonus, you may also have my son. He's going on 30, and I don't think he has held a job for more than 30 minutes. Certainly not long enough to ever earn a penny.

Maybe in my next life.

You may now officially consider yourself to have been flirted with -- by a rhesus monkey,

Harry, so sorry to hear all that. I wouldn't trade the ex-, I'd give her to ya! (sorry, no trades accepted!). My son is 20 and the kind of man I should have been, so... no trade there!

She left unexpectedly Jan. 17 (my bday) 2004. Jan. 30 I lost my job. 'been hell... just hell.

I do often hear people shout into the phone. My guess is that they're newbies who haven't figured out that increased volume doesn't help the signal. It may also be that there is a lot of background noise and the person is trying to be heard.

I think it's a normal adaptation that people who are having trouble either hearing the other person or being heard will increase their voice. In most face-to-face or landline-phone situations, this has the desired useful effect. Cell phones, however, are another story.

I couldn't agree more. I live in a tourist town and you would not believe the number of accidents because people were on the phone and not paying attention. We're talking major fender benders, pedestrian deaths, etc. Last year, a family of five were killed because some young toots was paying attention to her boyfriend instead of the road. This is not unique here, sad to say.
