While this story touches some heartstrings, I do have to play the coldhearted conservative and wonder whether this is a very effective use of resources. There is no dog shortage, and we kill more healthy ones than we treat with expensive medical treatments.

I'd keep my current dog if she lost a leg, no doubt about it. But if the dog is nobody's pet, I wonder whether expensive treatment is really justified.
