I saw The Ring for the first time last night on HBO. It really CREEPED me out!!! I thought it was scarier than The Omen or The Shining. Anybody else out there seen this flick yet? I notice that there is a Ring 2 now in the works however I really want to see the Japanese version, Ringu, upon which this movie was based. One thing I liked about The Ring is that videotape which didn't make much sense at first became more and more understandable as Rachel conducted her research.

If you really want to be creeped out, get the original Japanese version "Ringu". I had to turn the lights on for it. The ending ~ SPOILER ~ when she comes out of the TV is done in a backward masking effect. Oh my, it is sooooo wacked out. I just sat there saying, "Oh He!! no."

I'll definitely see Ringu. I wonder if HBO will be broadcasting it as well.

We bought a copy off E-Bay for cheap. Sometimes you can get it at Blockbuster. It is subtle which makes it even creepier. The "Ring" in it is not the horse ring, in fact there are no horses. The ring is the ring of the telephone. When the Japanese mother catches her son watching the video, it was truly heart wrenching. The son was a much more likeable charater all the way around.
I'll bet one of the big chain rental places will have it.

Considering how whacked out the Ring was, I think I will avoid Ringu. I went and say it with my(at that time) girlfriend. She digs horror movies and I don't. Of course I don't consider The ring a horror movie. More like some demon creation from a truly demented twisted mind.

The Ring was a snoozer...

I've seen
The Ring twice and thought it was by far one of the freakiest, scariest movies I've seen and I LOVE horror flicks.
Thanks for the tip on Ringu, I just added it to my Netflix queue. Can't wait to get it.

I thought just the ads for this were scary. Of course it doesn't take mech to terrify me. But my kid saw it and said it was very good, very creepy. Much later she said she wanted to watch it with me and her dad, to "see if it was as scary" as she thought. I told her, I don't know why you want me there, I'll probably be watching from behind the pillow, as usual!
I actually DO want to see this, but I am absolutely lilly-livered about all of them. I'm still a little spooky since I saw 6th sense.

There are alot of versions of Ringu a new one comes out every couple of years with all new characters (since the old ones die, of course) who find and watch the video. I personally didn't care for either of the Japanese versions I saw. Also, I liked other movies in the same genre much better than the Ring that hit theatres at about the same time. One I particularly remember right off is fear dot com.

Was it supposed to be scary?

I've seen The Ring twice and thought it was by far one of the freakiest, scariest movies I've seen and I LOVE horror flicks. Good news! There is a Ring 2 now in production. I imagine it will have to do with those video copies the woman and her son were making.

Was it supposed to be scary? Yep and obviously it was for some here... as for me, no muscle tension, not even a small quiver. Guess I need the 'Dr. Lector' suspense to get my attention.

I heard that Ringu is incredibly scary.

Everybody who sees the video DIES in exactly one week. The name The Ring refers to the ring of the phone call that a viewer of the video recieves right after it telling him/her that he/she will die in 7 days. What is interesting about this flick is how the reporter who viewed this tape does an investigation (since she knows she will die in a week) and how various parts of the video which means nothing takes on significance the more she researches it. I also want to see the original Japanese movie, Ringu, which I understand is even better. This is a FRIGHTENING horror flick but I also like it because it makes you think. The investigation by the reporter was fascinating.

Felt compelled to comment after running across the old thread in the archives . . .
"The Ring" scared the holy HELL out of me.
I couldn't sleep for three nights - I kept seeing that ladder and chair and Anna. (Not to mention what happens at the end.)
"Ringu" doesn't work as well on me.
However, every person I know who's seen both admits to being more scared by whichever version was seen first.

I first saw The Ring on the tube late at night and I was praying that my phone wouldn't ring.
