Apollo 17 Lunarscape: A Magnificent Desolation
Credit: Apollo 17, NASA (Image scanned by Kipp Teague)

Explanation: Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Lunar Module pilot and the second human to walk on the Moon, described the lunar landscape as "a magnificent desolation". Dramatic pictures from the Apollo missions to the lunar surface testify to this apt turn of phrase. Near the Apollo 17 landing site, Family Mountain (center background) and the edge of South Massif (left) frame the lunarscape in this photo of astronaut Harrison Schmitt working alongside the lunar roving vehicle. Schmitt and fellow astronaut Eugene Cernan were the last to walk on this magnificent desolation.

Did you see the lunar eclipse Saturday evening? I did, and got pictures before and during totality - until my camera's battery ran low.

Here are some selected pics, in chronological order. I used manual exposures from 1/1000 second to 8 seconds to get a variety of images and show detail. Some images have tree branches for perspective and effect. Images were cropped to reduce file size and frame the Moon.

To see all the images I took of the Moon 11-08-03, you will need to visit my album. There are 111 raw images plus 64 cropped edits!

Lunar Eclipse 11-08-2003

Click on an uncropped pic there, then on the new screen click on "EXIF image details" and you will have exact exposure time, f-stop, ISO, time/date, etc. Cool!

Those are really cool petuniasevan. Thanks for taking the time to get the pics and for posting them. It was cloudy here, so I couldn't see it.

Fotki must have their upload capability disabled for some reason. I can't upload images at all right now. :-(

Great set of pics from last nite's eclipse! It was clear and crisp in western NY, and we also had a nice view of the event.

The problem for us was that, after we had stopped along the side of the road to look for awhile, my starter crapped out around mid-totality, fortunately close to home :-(

(Maybe it was the tidal forces??)

That Lunar picture reminds me of the photos following Mt. St. Helens eruption some 20 years ago.
