Josh Shapiro signals support for abolishing Electoral College
Washington Examiner ^ | November 7, 2026 | Carter Schroppe

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) expressed openness toward the idea of abolishing the Electoral College following the Democratic Party’s decisive victory this week in the 2026 midterm elections.

While speaking at the Crooked Con event in Washington, D.C., Shapiro was asked by Pod Save America host Jon Favreau about the possibility of a Democrat-led Congress leading a charge to do away with the constitutional process for electing the president.

“You said in 2020 that the Electoral College should be abolished — you now have a Democratic legislature,” Favreau said. “Would you push to join the National Popular Vote Compact, which, for people who don’t know, would award the participating state’s electoral votes to the national vote winner once enough states join, and, now that, after Tuesday, there are now enough Democratic trifectas to actually get to that point?”

“I think that the national popular vote makes sense, my views on that have not changed,” Shapiro said. “I’ll work with lawmakers to figure out what the right mechanism is for moving forward on that, but, look, we’re the ultimate swing state in Pennsylvania. We’re the biggest swing state. We’re proud of that role we play. I think Pennsylvania can still play a massive role even in a national popular vote. And to me the most important thing is that the will of the people is heard and respected, and I think the popular vote is the way to do that.”

Josh is a good example of socialism. Loss of the electoral college will destroy the American ballot system.

A way to nullify states and individual rights by having massive voter fraud in states like CA and all of the northeast. You will never have a free and fair election again. Nty. The left will have civil war if the keep this up.

Some folks here have said that this “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact” is unconstitutional. I believe they are correct.

But a Democrat packed Supreme Court would probably say otherwise.
I wonder if the GOP can possibly get their act together in time.

As CCR once said:
I see the bad moon rising
I see trouble on the way

Weird that Dems came up with a handful of retarded ideas that no American would ever support and then they miraculously won a bunch of red states.
Im sure it’s just a coincidence

You make a great point. Sadly, no, the GOP will never get their act together.

And if it appeared that a democrat might lose the election because of the ‘interstate compact’, does anyone think that California and another large democrat state wouldn’t simply change their law to award their Electors to the democrat. All it would take would be a simple vote of the legislature.

Exactly! We escaped NJ to PA in 2020, only to get stuck with this wanker.

There is no national popular vote - in fact, individuals “voting for President” is not in the Constitution.

The President is selected by the State Legislatures, by the mechanism of appointing Electors. It is true that at the present time, all 50 Legislatures use the mechanism of retards voting to make these appointments, but that is not required.

Interstate compacts are legal (as long as they are approved by Congress), but Congress cannot legislate a requirement that states allow or require “voting for President”, as such, any such compact would eviscerate the power of non-participating State Legislatures to select the President (not to mention the need to create a body to do the counting of all the “popular votes”, a power not granted in Articles I or II).

"I wonder if the GOP can possibly get their act together in time."

It would be one thing if the GOP were ideologically opposed to leftist abuses and were too apathetic, inept or cowardly to do anything about it. That would allow for the possibility of reform.

The reality is the GOP is not ideologically opposed to many of the left's long term objectives; at most, they may have some minor disagreements as to how to get there.

In 2016, the GOP was given the presidency and both houses, largely on promises of the repeal of ACA/Obamacare. Paul Ryan sat with his thumb up his ass and made sure that didn't happen. In 2024 GOP turnout was energized to ensure an utter repudiation of Biden policies. GOP pols and pundits repeatedly said turn out needed to be, "outside the margin of fraud." Voters gave them exactly what they asked for. Trump pushed hard for reforms and his own GOP house and senate became part of a two-pronged attack against Trump with the dems launching deranged vitriolic attacks and the republicans quietly nodding their assent. I would wager that had the SAVE Act been ramrodded through in 2025, the outcome of this election would have been quite different.

GOP office holders spout conservative lines during campaigns but by 2026 voters became sick of hollow words without action.
