America’s medical schools do not train enough doctors, creating a growing shortage of quality physicians. This shortage is widely recognized and lamented, but the cause of the problem is often misdiagnosed. Observers from all ends of the political spectrum blame Congress, which “capped” subsidies for medical residencies in 1997. In reality, there are simply not enough U.S. medical school graduates.
Medical schools, not residencies, are the real bottleneck restricting the supply of quality physicians. After completing medical school, doctors are hired as residents, typically by hospitals, to complete the training that states require for licensure. But there have always been more residency positions in the U.S. than medical school graduates, and residency positions have expanded much more rapidly than medical school graduates.
In 1984, there were 18,457 residency positions for 14,741 seniors in MD-granting schools in the U.S. and another 206 in osteopathic schools, a ratio of 1.23. By 1997, when Congress froze the subsidy for medical residencies, there were 20,209 residency positions for 15,404 U.S. medical graduates, a ratio of 1.31. In 2026, there were 41,126 residency positions available, which was 1.40 times as many as the 29,437 graduates from U.S. medical schools applying for them.
Residency spots have more than doubled since 1997. Medical school graduates have not kept up.
How have residency programs expanded so dramatically even after Congress stopped paying for new residency positions? The simple answer is that hospitals typically make money on having residents. As a House Judiciary Committee report recently described it, “Residents often work 80 hours or more a week and ‘provide most of the patient care in teaching hospitals’ while ‘allow[ing] attending physicians to manage and bill for services to more patients more efficiently.’

Maybe they could start accepting white kids?
How many ends does a "spectrum" have? Because nobody with a lick of sense thinks that that the involvement of government is either necessary or desirable.
Hospitals love residency programs for the same reasons the construction and restaurant industries love illegal aliens and big tech loves H1 visas.
How about STOP SUBSIDIZING RESIDENCIES FOR FOREIGN MED SCHOOL GRADUATES. And provide tuition subsidies for qualified NON-DEI American citizen medical school students attending domestic medical schools.
Who GAF? All they do is prescribe Big Pharma meds to cover up symptoms rather than treat the root cause.
Be your own doctor.
Two of my closest relatives are in medicine.
The field crapped the bed and destroyed trust. People HAVE to be advocates for themselves and their families. Offloading decisions to people paid by Pharma are technicians governed by billable codes.
Only ones allowed to practice medicine in the U.S. are foreign born blacks and Muslims particularly those who can’t speak english. I blame it on the federal government whose policies are designed to keep white citizens out of medicine.
No college degree whether medical, engineering, scientific or liberal arts should not be as expensive as it is now.
Government subsidies only sustain and encourage the inflated costs.
And, college admissions should be based on merit and not on gender, cultural, racial, ethnic or political factors.
And yes I know, I might as well go shout at clouds!
I suspect that it's a larger issue that the Propaganda Media doesn't dare call out. There are lot of medical professionals who left the industry during the COVID-1984 Scamdemic, and would certainly caution others to avoid the field.
It's not healthcare and it's not about the patients. It's about medical korporations using government to support the korporations at the expense of the patients.
Sad thing is, so few doctors know anything about nutrition. They repeat the same things about reducing red meat consumption and eating more plants.
And let’s not talk about the food they serve in hospitals.
Correct. They only get 3 credit hours on nutrition, which is an absolute joke. Pharmacists are in the same boat.
They understand bioavailability.....but it never moves into practical application in a clinical scenario.
We are a stupid nation.
Yup.
Black privilege is strong in all of our institutions. They bend over backwards to promote blacks - even by lowering standards and bending the rules.

They still listen to the BS Ancel Keys spewed out years ago.
He was the original “Fauci”, he’s responsible for a lot of deaths.
Exactly.
If you can even CALL THAT food.
A lot of wisdom in your comment. I believe that diet is the most important component of health, by far. The medical system's primary mission is to push expensive drugs, thus enriching the pharmaceutical industry. Rarely root causes. And rarely using natural, generic nonpatented treatments.
Wound treatment, I seek out a doctor. Most everything else I treat myself.
I recall that the Clinton Administration opined that a real problem with the American medical system was that doctors were not paid enough, because there were too many doctors.
The way to solve the “problem” was to limit the supply of new doctors by forcing medical schools to reduce the number of students.
