In 2025 the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recommended that tax dollars going to USAID were of no benefit to the US. Later the Trump Administration cut those subsidies. Since then, eight leftist governments in Latin America have been ousted by elections favoring free-market oriented governments. The countries in which this occurred include Ecuador, Bolivia, Honduras, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Columbia and Brazil.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called these trends "encouraging. It was shameful that prior administrations were covertly propping up regimes that were oppressing their own people, wrecking their economies with socialist nostrums, and actively expressing their enmity toward the United States--the very source of the monies they were receiving. By taking the 'thumb' of these subsidies off the scales of politics in these nations voters were able to choose freedom and prosperity for their countries."
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) called the rise of right wing governments "just a burp in the long-term trend toward a socialist future for the world. It's a shame that the USAID that was helping fund this trend was temporarily interrupted. This allowed candidates funded by local oligarchies to resist the march of progressive politics in several Latin American countries. Restoring these USAID funds will be one of the actions that can be undertaken if Democrats retake control of Congress in this year's US elections."
