I created this cool app to explain inflation to my kids. I used 1957, the year of my birth. According to the CPI $1 of goods in 1957 cost nearly $12. But look at housing, gold, silver, the Dow, the S&P 500. You will be shocked as I was and this has been my business for 16 years. www.DollarTimeMachine.com

Year 1970 for me.
Everyday prices up $8.54 from $1. But S&P 500 up ten times as much: $85.76.

$14.85 for $1.00 1947. One place inflation has never taken hold is for bar bands. I never realized how rich I was in the mid 1960’s. Our band today gets the same as I was getting back then. Usually $100/per player. Good thing I still like doing it. πππΈπΊπΈ

Well, showing my age here, but as a kid, there were 5 and 10 cent stores.
Now they are Dollar Stores, but even those are not a dollar stores anymore.
The devaluation of the dollar is unrelenting!

When I arrived in US in 1960, they had DIME stores in Iowa city where I was enrolled in university of Iowa.

My favorite restaurant in 1962-1964 was Ted’s grill in downtown Chicago, $1.19 steak dinner with 2 sides!

It needs to add the cost of college. I bet that outpaces everything else.
To: Red Badger
ππ. Sadly there are enough folks that’ll still do it for the price offered. Like I said, despite set up, tear down, travel, practice and rehearsals, we all enjoy doing it and the audience seems to like it. Seven gigs in Oct. π€πππΈ

Yep, the 5 and 10 cent stores I mentioned were called DIME stores back then.
As Voltarie supposedly once said, βPaper money has always returned to its intrinsic value,,,,,ZEROβ.

Also, consider that the $20 gold coin is one ounce of gold and the US went off the gold standard in 71.

My favorite meal as a kid was James Coney Island in downtown Houston, an ancient and run down chili dog place full of well dressed businessmen and everyone else, 4 of the best chili dogs around and a bottle of Hires or XXX rootbeer for $1.00.

Now, the TAX per gallon of gas is double or more than the actual price of gas back then.
