*25 years ago today: The Sbarro massacre in Jerusalem:*

On August 9, 2001, at around 2:00 p.m., a Hamas suicide bomber walked into the packed Sbarro restaurant at the corner of Jaffa Road and King George Street in the heart of Jerusalem and detonated a bomb packed with metal meant to cause maximum harm.

Fifteen people were murdered that day, including seven children and a pregnant woman, and more than 100 others were wounded. Five of those murdered were from one family, the Schijveschuurders: the parents and three of their children.

One of the critically wounded, Chana Nachenberg, never recovered. She remained in a coma for nearly 22 years before dying from her injuries in 2023, becoming the 16th victim of the attack.

Ahlam Tamimi helped choose the target and bring the bomber to the restaurant. She was sentenced to 16 life terms, but was released in the 2011 Gilad Shalit deal and returned to Jordan.

The Sbarro bombing became one of the most horrifying symbols of the Second Intifada.

25 years later, we remember the victims and the families whose lives changed forever.

On this day in 2001, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at Sbarro's in Jerusalem during peak lunch hour, killing 15, including 7 children and a pregnant woman, and injuring 130.

A 16th victim finally succumbed to her wounds in 2023 after spending nearly 22 years in a coma.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.

The bomb contained nails, nuts, and bolts in order to maximize casualties. It was built by Hamas bomb-maker Abdullah Barghouti, who is serving 67 life terms for his role in the deaths of 66 people killed and hundreds injured in terrorist attacks for which he made the bombs.

Tamimi was arrested by Israel and given 16 consecutive life sentences but was released in the 2011 prisoner swap for captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. In interviews after she was released, Tamimi shared that she was not sorry for what she had done and would do it again.

Tamimi is currently living in Jordan, married to her husband, Nizar Tamimi, another convicted terrorist freed in the Shalit deal.

In 2013, the US Justice Department filed criminal charges against her for her role in the killing of two American citizens who died in the Sbarro bombing. Jordan has refused to extradite Tamimi to the US. In 2021, Interpol dropped the arrest warrant against her. She is still listed on the FBI's Most Wanted list, with a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to her arrest.

The Palestinian Authority has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the families of the terrorists involved in the Sbarro bombing.

The Sbarro Restaurant Massacre Sbarro.
At 2.00pm on a hot summer’s day in August 2001, a Hamas terror gang executed a bomb attack via a human bomb and a team of bombers on a busy pizza shop in the center of Jerusalem.



A resident of the village of Aqaba, north of Tulkarm, the human bomb, Izz al-Din Shuheil al-Masri, single and 23 (by some accounts 22), son of a well-to-do land-owning family, entered the busy Sbarro branch at the corner of King George Street and Jaffa Road at lunchtime on a school vacation day in Jerusalem.

(Many news and analysis sources use the expression “suicide bomber”. We reject that term; al-Masri’s goal and that of his handlers and the others involved was not for him to kill himself – that was a mere by-product of the plot – but to kill others. This is not suicide and calling it that amounts to an unjustified focus – or worse – on the actions and motivations of the barbaric killer and his accomplices.)

Entirely unguarded at the time, the Sbarro restaurant was filled with patrons, most of them children and young mothers. These, as we subsequently learned, were precisely the preferred target of the barbarians of Hamas and its allies. Fifteen people were murdered there that day, most of them children, including Malki Roth. One remains unconscious more than a decade later. Some 130 others, including passers-by, were injured in various serious degrees.

The attack on Sbarro was carefully and deliberately planned by multiple individuals in the service of jihadism in general and Hamas, the pre-eminent practitioner of Islamicist savagery, in particular.

To deny Israel’s right to exist, now a fashionable campus and campaign trend, means the people living there would die. No country would save those millions as refugees in time, if at all.
