On April 18, 2026, a mass murderer killed seven people in Kyiv, Ukraine. He took hostages and barricaded himself in a supermarket. Two police officers fled the scene. He killed the victims with a legally registered firearm. The killer was 58 years old. Police attempted to negotiate for an hour before storming the position and killing the murderer.
One day later, on April 19, 2026, Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, expressed support for relaxing Ukraine’s controls on firearms, allowing citizens to possess firearms, including handguns, for self-defense. Klymenko promised the mass murder would not be used to conduct mass checks of weapons owners. He deplored the action of the two police officers.
On the question of granting civilians the right to possess firearms, including handguns, the interior minister said: “I believe that people must be given the right to armed self-defense. Especially after the experience of the early days of the full-scale invasion, when civilians received weapons for national resistance”.
The push to liberalize the Ukrainian law on the ownership and carry of handguns did not start with Kylmenko. Ihor Fris, a member of the ruling Servant of the People Party, proposed a reform in 2022. Polls on the subject indicate 59% of the public supports the right to carry a handgun for self-defense. Only 22% reject the idea entirely.

The Soviets never considered invading the US because the people had 300 million guns.
Remember the government issuing guns to civilians at the beginning of the invasion, there were some threads on it here.
They were practicing with cardboard guns. You were only issued guns for hunting.
When I lived in Kiev in 2016 I lived right next to a gun store. Walking into the place you would think it was a large gun shop in Wyoming if you didn’t know where you were. Blew my mind.
Meanwhile, in the "Land of the Free", where the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed ...

Am armed society is a polite society and relatively safer if you never know if your target will shoot back.
In the US, it's like 120.5 guns per 100 people.

Passing out weapons because you’re only allowed guns for hunting....not personal protection.

Our government doesn’t give us machine guns and grenade launchers and supply the ammunition for free.
Note “...GIVEN ..” the right to self defense. Just using that language condemns any gov’mt to ‘Ell.

Look at those early FR threads on Ukraine arming citizens and you will see Putin’s people here at FR posting why that is a bad idea and bad for the Ukraine people, they are against it because it is civilians against trained military and the other problems of an armed populace.
There was a picture at the beginning of the war of an older Ukrainian woman with an AK-47 pointing it out her apartment window waiting for the Russians to come down the street. She might have got a few of them before a tank focused in her window.
