Now, I finally understand about Oil, and why it's extracted in one country, and shipped to another, instead of being refined here in the US. This gvies the Big Picture like never before, for me.

Has a lot to do with the grade of oil and our capacity to refine it. Also, our political climate over the last few decades has made it prohibitively expensive to improve, upgrade and continue upkeep on our existing refineries, let alone building new ones.

Yeah. I’ve been saying this for months every time someone asks why we don’t just use our own oil. It’s complicated and there are *ggod* reasons why. But with Democrats involved it’s always more complicated and there’s always an America Last component.

Russia has a similar problem. It has to export crude to India and then import refined products. I’m not sure of the logistics of that, but, in any case, the Rooskies are hurting for gas and diesel.

I don’t think the US is like that yet, but it’s something to think about.

**“Why The US CAN’T Use Its Oil” (also titled along the lines of “The US Has More Oil Than Anyone (It Still Can’t Use It)”) by Map Pack (~33 minutes).**

The video explains why the United States—the world’s largest oil producer—still imports large volumes of crude (and remains exposed to global price shocks) despite record output. The core issue is a mismatch between the type of oil the U.S. now produces and the refining and transportation systems it built, plus regulatory and economic factors that lock the system in place.

### Key points
- **Production vs. imports/exports**: In the video’s 2025 figures, U.S. wells produced a record ~13.6 million barrels per day (bpd). The country still imported ~6.2 million bpd while exporting ~4 million bpd of its own crude, leaving a net shortfall. The exported and imported barrels are not interchangeable.
- **Light shale vs. heavy-crude refineries**: The post-2009 shale boom (horizontal drilling + fracking) flooded the market with light, low-sulfur crude that is relatively easy to refine. Most U.S. refining capacity—especially the large Gulf Coast complexes that handle more than half of American refining—was optimized over decades for the opposite: thick, high-sulfur “heavy” crude. These plants rely on large cokers that crack the residual tar-like bottoms of heavy barrels into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other products. Feeding them mostly light shale oil underuses the equipment, yields a less optimal product mix, and raises costs.
- **Historical lock-in**: In the 1970s–80s, refiners invested heavily in heavy-crude capability because they expected easy light oil to decline. When shale arrived, the capital-intensive infrastructure stayed in place. Retooling dozens of major plants would cost on the order of hundreds of billions of dollars and take 10–15 years; private firms have little incentive, and government has not funded anything on that scale. Adding limited light-crude capacity (e.g., one large new unit) still leaves the heavy-processing equipment dominant.
- **Trade flows that result**: Surplus U.S. light crude is exported to refineries abroad (Europe, Asia) designed for it. Gulf Coast and Midwest plants import heavy crude—primarily from Canada’s oil sands (often >50–60% of U.S. imports), with additional volumes from the Middle East and historically Venezuela and Mexico. Refiners blend light and heavy streams to match their configurations. Heavy crude often trades at a discount, improving refining margins; the same complexes also supply chemical feedstocks for plastics and fertilizer.
- **Infrastructure and regulatory constraints**:
- Incomplete pipelines (Keystone XL was canceled) force more expensive rail/older-line movement of Canadian heavy crude.
- Alaska’s production is largely locked to the West Coast via the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
- The 1920 Jones Act requires that cargo between U.S. ports travel on U.S.-built, U.S.-owned, U.S.-flagged, U.S.-crewed ships. Qualifying tankers are scarce and expensive (several times the cost of foreign-flagged vessels), so moving crude or refined products between coasts (especially Gulf → West Coast) is costly. California’s special gasoline blend and limited local refining make it particularly isolated; workarounds sometimes involve routing product out of the country and back. The video notes temporary Jones Act waivers during supply crises.
- **Product-mix and capacity issues**: Heavy crude tends to yield more diesel, jet fuel, and marine fuel—critical for trucking, farming, aviation, and the military (the U.S. armed forces are a major fuel consumer). Shifting heavily toward light crude would tighten those mid-distillates. U.S. refining capacity has declined (roughly a million bpd lost since 2020 in the video’s account), and closures are usually permanent.
- **Why exports continue and bans failed**: A near-total crude-export ban existed from 1975 to late 2015. The shale surplus made it unsustainable—storage filled, wellhead prices collapsed relative to global prices—so Congress lifted it. Reinstating a ban would crash domestic light-crude prices without solving the refining mismatch. Producers, refiners, traders, Jones Act ship interests, and chemical companies all benefit from the current arrangement; the costs are diffuse.
- **Global pricing and vulnerability**: U.S. crude is priced against benchmarks (WTI, Brent) that move with worldwide supply and demand. High domestic production does not insulate drivers from shocks (e.g., the 2022 Russia–Ukraine war spike or a hypothetical early-2026 Strait of Hormuz closure in the video’s narrative). The Strategic Petroleum Reserve can cushion short disruptions but is finite and slow to refill. Canada’s expanded Trans Mountain pipeline now also sends more heavy oil west to Asia, reducing U.S.-directed volumes; Mexican heavy exports have declined as more stays domestic.
- **Venezuela and broader geopolitics**: Venezuelan extra-heavy crude from the Orinoco Belt was an excellent match for Gulf Coast refineries (Citgo once controlled significant U.S. capacity). Industry nationalization, technical decline, and sanctions collapsed output. About 150 types of crude come out of the earth. Only a couple are suitable for gasoline/diesel production.

A possible workaround would be vehicles that use CNG, but self-service would then probably go out the window unless we developed a fill interface that requires no human intervention.

We’ve raised generations high on self-esteem and low on common sense/self discipline. No new oil refineries for you.

It has a lot to do with us allowing Gaia Worshipers to commit economic sabotage here at home.

There is no good reason why we can’t refine our own GD oil right here in America.

Don’t have refineries set up to do this? BUILD THEM.

Its oh so expensive and takes oh so long to build them? SLASH REGULATIONS SO THAT WE CAN.

The solution is simple. It may not be politically easy, but it is simple. Just stop allowing Gaia Worshipers to sacrifice important parts of our economy and our national security for their fetish.

I remember Bill Clinton saying in the early 90’s that it takes too long to build refineries (I believe he said 10 years) so why bother starting to build them.
ok, so now we are 20 years past his 10 year time line. I wonder who was paying him off to say those things?

Have you ever been down wind of, or driven past an oil refinery?

I have driven through that area from the eastern border of Texas to Houston. Its an industrial hellscape of oil refineries. I admit it. Too bad. Its got to be somewhere. You need oil refineries. You need rare earth processing plants. You need mining and strip mining is by far the most efficient means of doing it. A lot of industrial processes are ugly and polluting. We can try to mitigate that with technology and require companies to set aside a fund to rehab the land when the industrial process is complete but.....we need those things. We need them both for economic reasons as well as national security reasons. That's the bottom line.

I hate to throw shade on your sales pitch, but I live about three miles from an oil refinery (as the crow flies) and in the spring and summer I've been downwind of two large ones.
40 years ago we called it the smell of money. These days, due to increased environmental concerns and the subsequent changes to production (especially Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) and water filter systems) the smell is not as prevalent as it once was.
Now, as you say, you must pass by much closer to one to notice the smell of money.

Have you ever been downwind of a pulp mill?

Pulp mill aroma is a powerful, unpleasant sulfur smell often described as rotten cabbage, rotten eggs, or hot garbage.

There’s every reason why no matter what we do we want to keep refining imported oil, because a lot of industrially important oil fractions (not gas and diesel) come from the grades we primarily import. We *should* make more refineries, but there’s *both* regulatory and NIMBY issues there. And that’s because we just *need* more refinery capacity. Any refinery, in theory, can be retooled to process any grade of oil, but it’s costly and time consuming to retool in an operation that profits by volume in a country where we also can’t afford fluctuations in volume.

So we need to fix regulations first (what part of Trump is working on that does anyone not get??), add capacity second, retool as strategically needed once there is a little buffer capacity.
