President Trump explicitly affirmed this figure in writing in October 2025. He also referenced 58,000 Hamas members killed at a press conference, but this was a misstatement, as the number exceeds Hamas’ total manpower.

Based on information revealed over time, the total militant force available during the war was roughly 65,000, consisting of 35,000 Hamas fighters, 12,700 PIJ members, several thousand from smaller factions, and approximately 15,000 recruits added during the war. Leftists and their Islamist allies claim 73,000 total deaths in Gaza. But Hamas themselves have admitted that at least 50,000 of the dead were their fighters. So that leaves 23,000. Let's assume those are all civilian men, women and children. Does that constitute a "genocide," or just casualties of war?

For comparison let's recall that a staggering 70.000 French civilians were killed by friendly fire (Allied bombs, tanks and guns) during WWII, most after D-Day, during the liberation of France. That is more than 3 times the number of "civilian" deaths in Gaza. Was that a "genocide" of the French?

Secondly, out of a population of 2.2 million Gazans, civilian deaths of 23,000 constitutes 1.02% of the population of 2.25 million. In comparison to the actual genocides of Ukrainians (13-15%) in 1932-3, Armenians (50%+) in 1915-23 and Jews in Europe (66%) in 1933-1945, that is not only absurd but insulting to even consider using the word "genocide" to describe civilians deaths in Gaza.

As long as articles keep appearing around Israeli genocide and IDF killing of civilians I’ll keep posting this piece of reality about civilian deaths in warfare, and it really does not matter whether there are 7,000 or 700,000. The very fact Hamas and Hezbollah say they can count the number killed means these people were within the boundaries of their control. Any realistic appraisal of their behavior would see they consider civilians only as so many biodegradable sandbags possessing utility as political props.

The idea of “bringing terrorists to justice” is a breathtaking mockery of any civilized understanding of justice. All four Geneva Accords deal with terrorist organizations, and they find no sanctuary anywhere. The feral psychopaths of Hamas and Hezbollah never display the civility required for Geneva Convention definitions for militia, armed force, or volunteer corps, but are so dissociated from country or culture, so committed to butchery that they best match Webster’s definition for a virus. They are not insurgents or freedom fighters, and when captured, certainly not prisoners of war. These killers are not members of an organized resistance movement carrying arms openly, and they have no distinctive identifier. The Geneva Conventions place terrorists beyond the pale, discuss no limits in dealing with their depredations. So, their eradication would come closest to achieving meaningful justice.

The Geneva Conventions, which attempt to grasp rational, moral threads to apply during wars’ barbarity formed the basis for our operations. For my Navy experience helping to pulverize a major enemy base in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, I especially liked the obvious reading of Articles 28 and 29 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The VC were responsible for any civilian deaths in the base our ship shelled. Those civilians qualified as Protected Persons within the enemy’s physical control and could not be used to render certain points and areas immune from military operations. The Convention articles are as follows:

The passages furnished the basis for rules of engagement we followed when attacking a legitimate military target. The base the SEAL team identified in the U Minh Forest had been continuously used at least since the Vietnamese had fought the Japanese, so families of the VC would have been residents as well. Distance provided me with the blessing of avoiding the cleanup afterwards for the mess I helped create with our 445 rounds of 3”50cal. However, I am certain our task force was effective. We helped to shatter the last intact VC main force unit, forcing it to surrender control of the region.

I agree. We also know why. The IRGC in Iran and Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon do not care one iota about civilian casualties - except to use them as propaganda weapons.

Compare and contrast what happened during WWII. The Nazis and the Japanese military junta were just as fanatical as the Islamists. But they faced Churchill and Roosvelt who understood that to win the war, they could not allow the German and Japanese civilians to avoid the consequences of letting themselves be ruled by dictators, and not fight for their freedom, and at the same time be protected from military attacks by the countries who the German and Japanese rulers waged war against. (Many years ago I saw an interview with one of the British judges at the Nurmberg trials who made that argument - more cogently than I did above.) And thus we had Bomber Harris, the Tokyo firestorm and Hiroshima and Nagasaki - and the Allies won!

Unfortunaltely, the ethics have changed, and as I mentioned in a previous post, not only the international organizations but also the media and the leftist parties in our Western nations do not accept war carried out in that way. I guess one of the reasons is that since WWII the West has never been exposed to attacks like the Blitz of London etc.

Israel is the only country that has been exposed in that way, (maybe with the exception of the US on 911) but being sui generis in the West post WWII, her experiences have not been allowed to affect the "humanitarian laws".

My guess is that if several western countries would be faced not only with threats, but military attacks like in the 1940s the Laws of War would very quickly change to something that would Sherman's march through the South to happen again.
