The number of University of California Berkeley students who failed a computer science course this past spring semester was “significantly higher” than previous terms, according to a recent report.
According to The Daily Californian, a whopping 35 percent failed the introductory course “The Beauty and Joy of Computing” (designed for students “with minimal prior exposure to computer science), and just under 11 percent in “The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs,” an intro to programming class.
Computer science department guidelines note that “7% of students in lower division courses [including the courses noted], should receive D’s and F’s,” and that “a typical GPA for a lower division course will fall in the range 2.8 – 3.3.”
(“Guidelines” generally are of a non-mandatory nature; however, the article quotes “should” and “will” which indicate the opposite. The College Fix reached out to article author Litong Deng for clarification, but did not get a response.)
Professor Dan Garcia, who taught both of the courses, said this past spring close to 30 students were busted for cheating on take-home exams. He blamed the “vast increase” in cheating on students’ use of A.I.
“[I]t’s students who are leaning a little too hard on [A.I.] to do their work for them, and then at exam time just really aren’t ready,” Garcia said.
Gireeja Ranade, who taught “Optimization Models in Engineering” in the spring, concurred with Garcia’s assessment, describing the semester as “differently challenging.”
Prerequisites for Ranade’s class include linear algebra and vector calculus; however, she said “many students struggled” with the former, with one telling her when they took the class it had an “’open-internet, open-AI policy’ for homework and exams.”

“Yale fall catalog loaded with racism-focused courses as tuition nears $70K”
“Despite its reputation as one of the most prestigious and academically rigorous schools in the world, Yale University is set to offer more than a dozen courses focused on racism, racial oppression, and white supremacy in the upcoming fall semester as tuition continues to rise.
Among the offerings is a sociology course entitled “Is That Racist?: Theory and Methods for Diagnosing and Demonstrating Racism,” which promises to teach students “a broad range of ways social theorists have defined the term and methods they have used to demonstrate” racism. “
Uneducated students failing...
Who knew that if you didn’t actually read, do homework and complete the coursework, then you can’t pass the midterm exams. Just a wide-eyed surprise, I tell ya!
Build trade schools instead.
If you want to be poor your whole life.

I saw a clip of Matt Walsh talking with a progressive feminist. She was concerned about her daughter, who liked Disney princess movies -- but was really attracted to the white Disney princesses (she is white). The progressive feminist wanted her daughter to be more diverse in her attraction to Disney princesses.
Matt Walsh related that his daughter is also attracted to Disney princesses -- and her favorite one is Moana, the Polynesian princess. The progressive feminist was SO thrilled to hear this. "That's great!!" But then Matt said that Halloween was coming up and his daughter wanted to dress up as Moana the Polynesian Princess, and he wasn't really sure if that was a good idea ...
The progressive feminist gave that some thought and advised against it. It seemed pretty racist to dress up as Moana. Matt gave her a big smile and said, "So white people are just damned if we do, and damned if we don't?"
There goes Joe Biden’s theory.
This is the result of primary school and high school failure.
This is due to backdoor affirmative action. AA has been outlawed in CA for almost 30 years. So the UC response is to eliminate SAT scores and AP scores and use GPAs only. There is also a preference for students from Title 1 schools aka underperforming minority schools.
The result is that 40% of the students admitted to UCSD can’t do 8th grade math. But it excludes suburban students who have completed Calculus with As.
Hopefully Trump’s DOE will file a lawsuit.
All the time I spent in my university library looking up stuff and reading engineering and science periodicals in the 80’s because there was no Internet…that I can find in seconds now at home whenever. These kids are even more than just stupid with the easy access they have to information and instructional explanations on YouTube.
“College institutions have failed. We need to bulldoze the campus of Berkeley (and most other colleges) and start over from scratch.”
____________________________________________________________
Colleges haven’t failed. They’ve adapted their courses to students who arrive with sufficient preparation - unlike what appears to be the majority of US students. Once those prepared and motivated foreign students began leaving the student body, the grades began to fall.
That’s our fault for not teaching kids the essentials to understand more complex science and technology concepts.
Maths be hard yo, and racist too! Basic to advanced Algebra is the minimum needed, too many students have a HS diploma but no wisdom or basic skills. (Fill in the blank) “studies” degrees are exactly what employers want, not.
It’s incredible how much there is out there.
And if you use NotebookLM, it really makes studying a cinch.
And yet, here we are.
They’re gonna need that linear algebra for quantum computing
They flunked so what? In my college experience, it took real effort at lack of effort to get an F. Maybe Berkeley needs to re-examine its admissions criteria if it is letting in so many students who cannot handle the academic course-load.
And these are intro courses.....
