In December I listened to an interview with Ben Sasse that stopped me in my tracks. And another in February. And another recently. That last one in particular not only challenged me, but ultimately has shifted something deep in me. It’s not hyperbole to say that I think Ben Sasse is currently the most interesting person in the world.
Ben Sasse, the former senator from Nebraska, former president of the University of Florida, a man who by any measure had built the kind of life most people spend their whole careers chasing, sat in the most recent interview across from a New York Times columnist and talked about dying. He has stage four pancreatic cancer. He has five forms of it. Liver, lungs, lymph nodes, vascular system, and the pancreas where it started. He was given three to four months to live.
And he was perhaps the freest man I’ve ever seen.
He wasn’t performing freedom. He wasn’t projecting calm. The interviewer, Ross Douthat, broke down crying during the conversation. And when he did, Sasse laughed. Not unkindly, but the way a man laughs when the heaviness and the lightness of something are both true at the same time and he’s decided not to pretend otherwise.

The Republican voted, off of obviously falsified charges and evidence, to impeach President Trump.
He appears to be either incredibly stupid, or evil.
All I know is, when he became President of UF, the liberals’ heads exploded.
They shouldn’t have exploded, because he is a lifetime honorary member of their death cult.
Turd, crook as politician.
Con and thief on leaving.
Now saint cuz he’s dying?
That is true redemption.
Not.
And now I know that I should take nothing this person posts seriously.

How would you live if you knew when you were going to die? I sat down with the former Republican senator Ben Sasse to hear how he is facing his own mortality after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. For Sasse, cancer brings pain, but also clarity, sharpening his focus on the state of our politics, his wife and three children, and the God he expects to shortly meet.
We were told by the Senate Conservatives Fund that this guy was a huge ‘conservative’ then it turned out he was just another neoCON.
Sorry for his sickness but i won’t pretend that he was a maga good guy because he wasn’t.
How would you live if you knew when you were going to die?
the answer affects your mental state
How do your actions affect the lives of many people?
this answer has long term positive or negative impacts
the second question is much more important to society and to large numbers of people
On this question he was a big failure
I think we should leave him alone to die peacefully. This is not 2017 any more.
We’re all going to die - and we never know when.
Few get to know when, and it must actually be comforting if you know the Lord Jesus and have a walk with the Lord.
Even you young, will die someday, many at an age before 70.
Better be ready.
I don’t wish cancer on anybody but Ben Sasse is a natural born Ahole not the most interesting man in the World.
I was not even thinking about him until he brought himself to my attention. And when you do that, you deserve what you asked for.
I posted a link to the interview and got the same vicious responses that you are receiving. I don’t like the man’s politics either, but good grief. If you can’t take away something from his approach to his imminent departure then your horizons are set too close.
Trump hater.
I’m sorry he’s dying, but he is/was kind of a douche.
If you go around, for all the years since, bragging about deeply wronging an innocent man, pancreatic cancer is the least of that person’s worries.
Now, for those that defend such a piece of trash and such an action, they have another worry coming.
