The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is set to meet with Netflix as theater owners call its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery an “unprecedented threat” to the movie business.
“The news that Netflix had secured exclusive rights to negotiate for WBD [Warner Bros. Discovery] raises significant concerns for the DGA,” the labor union said in a statement to TheWrap.
“We believe that a vibrant, competitive industry — one that fosters creativity and encourages genuine competition for talent — is essential to safeguarding the careers and creative rights of directors and their teams,” the guild said in a statement,” the DGA added.
The labor organization went on to say that it plans to meet with the streaming giant so that it can address its concerns with Netflix’s intentions for one of Hollywood’s most prominent studios.
“We will be meeting with Netflix to outline our concerns and better understand their vision for the future of the company. While we undertake this due diligence we will not be commenting further,” the statement continued.
Theater owners, meanwhile, are blasting the acquisition as an “unprecedented threat” to the film industry, TheWrap reported.
“The proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. by Netflix poses an unprecedented threat to the global exhibition business,” Cinema United President and CEO Michael O’Leary told the outlet.
“The negative impact of this acquisition will impact theatres from the biggest circuits to one-screen independents in small towns in the United States and around the world,” O’Leary continued.
The CEO of Cinema United, the world’s largest exhibition trade association, added that the organization is “ready to support industry changes that lead to increased movie production and give consumers more opportunities to enjoy a day at the local theatre.”

I do agree, this deal needs to be struck down, and hard.
Are you in the cinema biz? I’m skeptical. Product in the movie business is generated by the talent, not the corporate shells that hire the talent. Money flows to where the talent is. For decades, raising money has been so completely about what you now, not who you know, that buying studios is more about getting access to their past content than any real edge in making future product.
We seem to be moving towards everything streaming.
I guess writing cogent sentences is no longer part of journalism school.
Looks like it was the editor’s day off to boot.
Why strike it down...who cares? Last time I went to a theater was probably 15 years ago. The movie was so-so but the rude and crass audience behavior convinced me that the theater business was dying for reasons more than the popularity of streaming. If I want a group viewing experience I can invite over a bunch of friends and have that without being annoyed by the nastiness that pervades our society.
Netflix makes a lot of stuff that’s better than Warner Brothers; they should keep doing what they are doing and in ten years Warner Brothers won’t seem so valuable.
Netflix and all the other Streamers should be getting their money back for at least half the crap movies they offer on their platforms.
People forgot how to behave in theaters. Covid is somewhat to blame, demographic shifts largely to blame.

When was the last movie you saw that included talent on most aspects- director, writer and actors?
Long long time for me.
Buggy whip manufacturers blast the auto industry.

“ Horrible headline and first sentence, both of which refer to “its” acquisition without clearly identifying the “it”
This story made no sense. I w
Saw merger and Netflix and chose the opposition
Oh. And also knew this:
DGA Christopher Nolan
President
He is all about creativity and doing things the way the director wants it done. He wants his movies on the big screen the way they’re meant to be. And people love to work for him
He’s also won many awards while being ridiculed in front of the world by the usual Jimmy Kimmels.
It’s about all the media consolidation. Soon they’ll only be one company where you will get all of your entertainment and news from.
Netflix produces better shows than the major Hollywood broadcast network connected TV studios.

It’s not like we can tell the difference now.
We made a small investment in Angel Studios. They’re making some really good stuff.
Truth and Treason was very well done.
