Massie Reintroduces Repeal of Gun-Free School Zones Act

On August 29, 2025, Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, reintroduced the “Safe Students Act”. The Safe Students Act (H.R. 5066) repeals the Gun Free School Zone Act of 1990. From H.R. 5066:

(3) The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 (18 U.S.C. 921 note, 922 note; section 1702 of Public Law 101-647; 104 Stat. 4844-4845) is repealed.

Thomas Massie has issued a press release to notify people about the reintroduction of the bill. From the press release:

The “Safe Students Act” (H.R. 5066) repeals the “Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990,” (GFSZA) eliminating GFSZA’s one-size-fits-all federal ban on guns in school zones. Enactment of the “Safe Students Act” would make it easier for state and local governments and school boards to unambiguously set their own firearms policies.

“Gun-free zones are ineffective and make our schools less safe. Since 1950, 94 percent of mass public shootings have occurred in places where citizens are banned from having guns,” Rep. Thomas Massie said. “Banks, churches, sports stadiums, and many of my colleagues in Congress are protected with firearms. Yet children inside the classroom are too frequently left vulnerable.”

It is nice to see John Lott’s work on where mass public murder takes place being referenced by Representative Massie. The Safe Students Act was first introduced in 2007 by Representative Ron Paul. Massie recognizes Ron Paul’s effort:

This bill, originally introduced by Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) in 2007, repeals GFSZA, a law that makes it “unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In 1995, the Supreme Court held the GFSZA unconstitutional, which prompted Congress to amend the bill in 1996. The Supreme Court has not ruled on the constitutionality of the amended act.

It would be good to repeal the Gun Free School Zone Act of 1990. It is a good candidate to be ruled unconstitutional (again).

Senator Joe Biden(D) coauthored that bill.

Since 1950? What are the numbers from 1990 on?

Evan if this stupid law was legal under the Constitution, what the hell effect does the prospect of breaking a dumb law that makes zero sense have on people who have as their intent to commit mass murder? Why are we sending certifiable idiots to Congress?

But, but, the Gun Free School Zone Act of 1990 has saved countless lives. There has not been any shootings or children killed by guns since 1990. /s/

When are the emotionally driven leftists going to realize anti gun laws do nothing more than infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens?

No children's lives have ever been saved by preventing law abiding citizens from carrying guns.
The signs will never stop someone with ill intent, and may even have the opposite effect.

I don’t speak DC language...if the original bill was repealed, isn’t Massie’s bill a new one and not a re-introduction?

The purpose of the law is for low-brain liberals to feel good and "feel" they've helped to reduce school shootings, which of course is not the case.

It would be useful to see details on statistics.
K-12 vs college, gun-free church vs other, gun free retail vs other retail, etc.

It would be useful to see details on interruption of gun violence. On 2 occasions I was under serious attack. Bystanders pulled out their concealed carry and my attacker backed off. Are there statistics on how often a gun prevents a crime? Bodily injury or death vs property crime?

I believe in teachers carrying guns and knowing how to use them.

Our liberal friends at Wikipedia actually did a good job of explaining which locations are affected by that stupid law.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun-Free_School_Zones_Act_of_1990

From that link:

“Most states allow some form of unlicensed carry by persons who are not prohibited by statute from owning or possessing firearms. This may be open-carry, vehicle-carry, or concealed carry without the need for a permit.

The Federal GFSZA prohibits unlicensed carry by making it a federal crime for an unlicensed individual to travel into a Gun Free School Zone unless they meet one of the other criteria defined in Section ‘B’. The large number of K-12 schools in developed areas makes it difficult for an individual to travel any distance without entering a Gun Free School Zone.”

A Gun Free School Zone includes a public road running next to a school. So many good people are probably breaking that law every day.

One recalls that Colt’s 45-caliber was called ‘the gun that won the West.’ Not because it killed, but because it kept others from killing by equalizing men. When more than one is armed, it is less likely that — as an example — a transsexual murderer, as we have seen a number of times in recent news, would be free for some moments to go on a rampage.

Superintendent (1 block from me) at our local school(2 blocks from me), is a retired Marine (he needed no training). Even before he started as Principal the board of directors decided upon staff to be armed with firearms training.

The state of Texas had a grant program for increased security for the campus.

I guess MAGA will have to oppose this, since Massie introduced it.

Not just equalizing men, but equalizing women as well.

The late Harry Browne said:

“A handgun is a girl’s best friend.”

And, “The only thing that stops a rape is a gun.”

Colonel Colt himself (supposedly) said:

“God created men, but Sam Colt made them equal”.

“This slogan reflects the idea that Colt’s revolver democratized personal defense, allowing individuals of any physical stature or strength to stand on equal footing in confrontations, effectively leveling the playing field.”

Love my handguns, I own two.

You know an unprincipled man is desperate when he turns to his last resort which is doing the right thing.

Even though his motive is purely political.

Nothing wrong with that.

Sometimes it takes awhile for career hacks to learn doing the right thing is more often than not good politics.
