Woman Refuses To Take In Her Parents After They Regretted Pursuing Their Dream, Is Called Selfish
Bored Panda ^ | Sep 2024 | Ieva Pečiulytė

Boomer parents moving back in with their adult children isn’t a new thing. Money has been the primary reason, for the most part, especially since many elders failed to save for their retirement.

The story you’re about to read has a slightly different premise. A couple decided to sell their home and travel full-time, but their sudden change of plans led them to move in

The woman initially welcomed the idea as a show of love for her parents. However, things got heated when she refused a longer-term arrangement.

After an episode of emotional blackmail from her mother, the author asks the internet if she is out of line. Scroll down for the full story.......

The author isn’t alone in her distress about having her folks move in with her. According to statistics by Pew Research, 23% of Americans find living in a multigenerational household stressful.

These sentiments are more common among adult children, accounting for 31% of respondents.

Multigenerational households have their fair share of pros and cons. Investment advisor Triton Financial Group pointed out one upside: a built-in support system. Caregiving becomes less of a burden for aging parents and younger children.

Relatives also grow closer to each other, strengthening family bonds. However, the most significant benefits are in finances since shared expenses significantly reduce living costs.

On the other hand, the deterioration of relationships can be the biggest drawback of a multigenerational home. It can be particularly true among family members who are used to living apart. The sudden co-existence under one roof may create conflict, especially when there are differences in beliefs and opinions.

The author seemed to have this problem, particularly with her parents possibly invading her personal space. It did cause some conflict between her and her mother, which is always unfortunate.

“...As a late Boomer”

Look up Generation Jones.

Defined as being born between 1955 to 1965, sometimes considered a subset of Boomers with unique differences snd differeing circumstances than boomers.

Plus it separates those who don’t, won’t or can’t identify with the counter culture experienced abd pushed by boomers.

I’m glad I have an out, because my older siblings are disgusting unaware anti- constitutionalist socialists.

And at the same time they are hording all the wealth and homes and need to have it forcefully taken from them.

That will draw a lead shower. I'm not hoarding anything. I worked for 50 years, paid off all my mortgages and debts and saved responsibly for my retirement. I will defend it to the last from parasites that seek to forcibly seize it.

I’m thinking of going on a world volcano tour.

Wherever I run out of money (which shouldn’t take too long) that’s where I’ll throw myself in.

In regard to my children's success in life, I taught them and guided them through what it takes to attain it, and led by example. Now that they are successful in their own endeavors, they are doing very well on their own. And, when my wife and I leave this world, my kids will have more than enough in addition to what they already have to continue a legacy of success and not ever want for anything. Unless they develop gambling addictions or mental illness, they will be more than just fine.

Of course the article has just one side of the story. Left out are questions like:

Did the boomer parents take care of their parents in their elder years and was the daughter, then a kid, part of helping so she’d do the same? I can see someone being expected to be taken care of if they took care of elder parents. I’m not saying it’s necessarily right, just saying it may be how they were raised.

Did the boomer parents have a life scare like cancer that they expected to kill them soon, leading to blowing money and enjoying life while they could, only for cancer to go away?

But yeah, my wife and I financially planned to need little to no help from our kids. My wife used to ask why the need to be millionaires by the time we retired, to which I always responded with “inflation”.

When we were house hunting (ye gods and little fishes was that 13 years ago? yes it was) we had "in-laws quarters" on our list. Now mind you the parents had just retired and were in good health but things change. Now that they have changed the place is ready to go when needed.

Because that is what you do when you have family.

And set an example for the young'uns because someday we may be in need ourselves.

Why didn’t the parents downsize into a smaller house and spend some of the extra money instead of blowing it all?

“they are hording all the wealth and homes and need to have it forcefully taken from them.”

You mean boomers? You think someone should forceably take my house and my savings?

I hear you. We had nothing to do with Woodstock or the protest movement. We were kids. We also only got one movie made about us “Dazed and Confused”.

I went to the link.

The "story" is an anonymous pile of fiction from "FAKEDIT" your one stop shopping for fantasies from people suffering from MCS.

I am sorry I gave it any consideration at all.

Read the rest of my post.

I get tired of the "Boomer are the cause of all the trouble in the world. Including things that happened in 1910."

Most of the complainers do not even know what Boomer means.

Don’t bother.
I live on the side of a volcano(lots of small earthquakes) and have a short drive to an very active one. It all looks the same.
I’m in Hawaii.

While I considered the possibility of a faked story, I thought it was something to be considered. I’m a boomer but dad tried his best not to burden us with his health care. At 94 he was doing really well until he failed to care of a torn off toenail. Ended up getting gangrene in August and died in Nov (there were lots of complications). But up until then last few months he was mostly self sufficient.

I hope to not be a burden to my wife and daughter. Told both that if I can’t get around by myself let me expire. They do not need worry about money.
