It's a good thing I recorded videos of Obidos during our Portugal trip because the memories of it were so magical as to seem to have been perhaps just a dream. No cars (except official vehicles) on the town's roads. It was like a trip back hundreds of years or more in time. it was weird because after we arrived at our historical hotel in the evening, the town seemed dead with almost nobody there. Imagine our surprise when the next morning, after our continental breakfast, we opened the hotel door and saw the streets filled with thousands of tourists. We explored the town and castle walls and other historical buildings. We also had what was easily the BEST seafood medley meal I ever ate. Finally, I was SHOCKED at how well preserved the Roman aqueducts remained after about 2000 years.
Welcome back!
Portugal is an amazing country.
Did you visit Obidos?
“...was like a trip back hundreds of years or more in time”
Except for the animal messes in the street and people tossing their waste out their second floor windows into the street.
Huh? No fish in the Mediterranean? When did that happen?
I certainly believe you. But our McDonald's in town does a fairly decent job with their Filet O' Fish.
Filet of Fish? Not bad for fast food but not like in Iberia.
My first meal was in Bilbao Spain in 1958. Bunch of us midshipmen followed the OOD’s suggestion as to the best restaurant. It was spartan and the only offering that night was stuffed squid boiled in their own ink. Looked horrible but tasted so good we ate all they had. Wonderful!
the Spanish and Portuguese cook and prepare fish better than anyone in Europe.
I’ll cede that because I have not had either. But Italians do a pretty credible job...I had octopus in Naples that tasted like a t-bone steak.
Phenomenal...
Yes, i was in Obidos in 2002.
We then went to Spain and explored everywhere except Madrid.
