This is where you see astroturfing at its finest. Prior to the Obergefell decision on gay marriage, no one cared about trans issues. When the SCOTUS struck down state law prohibitions on gay marriage, it came much quicker than the legal and political organizers advocating it thought it would take. They were geared up for a long term legal and political siege, and suddenly their war was over. I find no better explanation as to why and how the trans rights movement materialized out of thin air than the fact that the apparatus constructed to obtain gay marriage was all dressed up and suddenly had no place to go. So they shifted directions, re-labeled their organizations and went ahead and started agitating for trans right.
