It IS too late in several crucial states for a change of nominee.
They had no choice. The Biden camp was looking for any excuse to cancel the debates. If Trump had quibbled, they would have walked away and blamed it on Trump. Trump understood the dynamics of the situation better than you did, which is why he decided to call Biden’s bluff. He correctly calculated that the outcome of having a debate with Biden was better than the outcome of not having one so he took the only option the Biden camp gave him before they had a chance to find an excuse to cancel the debates completely.
Fortunately Trump was smarter than all the pearl clutchers who were predicting disaster for the debate. They were wrong then so now they’re moving on to whining that Trump miscalculated by not insisting the 1st debate take place after the Democratic convention. There would’ve been no Trump 45 if he had followed the risk averse strategies of timid Republican advisors.
