I know the general was popular, that doesn’t necessarily equal best man for the job.
The US has sacked top generals in the past in the midst of conflict. McArthur is one example and leadership during iraq and Afghanistan wars was also changed.

Time will tell if this was a prudent move, or political.

Though the top leadership of Russian forces has not changed, plenty of generals have been sacked with little media attention, sure the same will not happen here

From what I have heard, Zaluzhnyi insisted on conscripting 500,000 new soldiers, and Zelenski refused. Zaluzhnyi was saying in public that the war would be lost without more soldiers.
