Milley's military is blundering again -- misrouting sensitive U.S. military communications to some web operator in ... Mali

Who needs enemies when you've got Gen. Mark Milley running the Pentagon?

Here's the latest military fiasco on his watch, as reported by the Financial Times

Millions of US military emails were misrouted to Mali by a “typographical leak” that exposed highly sensitive information, including diplomatic documents, tax returns, passwords and travel details of senior officers.

Despite repeated warnings over a decade, the steady stream of email traffic to the .ML domain, the country identifier for Mali, continues to be the result of people mistyping .MIL, the suffix for all US military email addresses.

The problem was first identified nearly a decade ago by Johannes Zurber, a Dutch internet entrepreneur who has a contract to manage the country domain in Mali.

Zuurbier has been collecting misleading emails since January in an effort to persuade the US to take this issue seriously. He has nearly 117,000 misdirected messages — about 1,000 arrived on Wednesday alone. In a letter to the United States in early July, Zurber wrote: “This danger is real and can be exploited by enemies of the United States.”

The reverse of Hanlon’s razor is at play here, IMHO.

We might end up missing this putz. I’ll give you odds the next political hack chairman is the wokest, most perverted, most incompetent yet. That’s how promotions have been handed out the last 20 years. The new guy.

“In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder by a policeman in Minnesota in 2020, Gen Brown released an emotional video speaking about how his own personal experiences as a black man in America “didn’t always sing of liberty and equality”.
“I’m thinking about the pressure I felt to perform error-free,” he said of his early military career, “especially for supervisors I perceived had expected less of me as an African American.”

I don’t give a rat’s behind. How the hell are you going to fight two world wars on opposite sides of the planet that we are about to get blundered into?

Someone on another website said: “That should have been blocked by the internal filters from being sent there.”

Spot on. This latest joker is a reincarnation of colon powell.
Both promoted/selected simply to fill a quota, and relieve white guilt.
If he wasn’t black, “CQ” Brown would be a retired LTC spending his days fishing off some bayou in Louisiana...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

for that to happen, someone would have to want them to be blocked.

And what are the odds Chinese intelligence agents own the Mali site (and others around the world) to collect US military data and have agents in DOD in positions to route correspondence to them??? Far fetched you say???? Wanna bet!!!

Hard to believe our best and brightest can possibly be this stupid and incompetent by accident.

I think the story is suspicious. The person who manages the domain and says they are collecting the emails would be doing so intentionally, since they have a server mapped to likely hostnames in the .mil domain, and if those servers really belonged to, for example, the navy of landlocked Mali, the servers would bounce misrouted mail, not capture it.

I don't know the exact format of .mil emails, but somebody@navy.ml would get routed to a server with a pretty atypical name:

handle.catchemail.ml

That server is apparently mapped to a group of mail servers in the USA run by a very large organization. The kind of organization that might provide IT services to the US Government.

If you send an email to somebody@navy.ml as of today it is going to stay in the USA and go to a server operated by a large US corporation.

Readily available public data shows that the emails would be routed to a server in the US operated by the kind of company that would provide IT services to the US government.

for that to happen, someone would have to want them to be blocked.

Which is why that email destination maps to about ten servers located in the USA and controlled by a large US corporation.

“This danger is real and can be exploited by enemies of the United States.”

More dangerous than a box of golf shirts stored in an unused bathroom in Mar a lago?

"Readily available public data shows that the emails would be routed to a server in the US..."

Probably located in Hillary's Chappaqua bathroom.
