Homeowner Shoots at Suspected Car Thief

Early on Monday morning, January 9, 2023, at about 5:30 a.m. in Roseland, New Jersey, a team of two car thieves broke into an upper-middle-class home on a cul-de-sac next to Route 280.  One of the thieves had checked out a white SUV next door, but the doors on the vehicle were locked.

At the residence where the incident occurred, one of the suspects discovered an unlocked window, which offered access to the garage situated under the house.

The entry set off an alarm. The homeowner, as reported by the police, investigated and came face to face with the intruder. Exactly what happened next has not been reported in detail. The homeowner fired a shot, and the intruder and accomplice fled in the vehicle they arrived in. The police believe that the vehicle was already stolen. From abc7ny.com:

Mayor James Spango said the suspect entered the home’s mudroom after getting in through an unsecured garage window.

Officials said the burglary suspect was looking for a key fob to steal a BMW parked in the resident’s garage.

The terrified homeowner grabbed his handgun and fired a shot at the intruder. The bullet appeared to miss the suspect, but the thief jumped out of the same window he entered and got away in a vehicle waiting outside.

In the nbcnewyork.com video, the mayor emphatically says the homeowner will not be charged.

Video of the suspects outside the homes has been shown in news reports. Police say the home was likely targeted because of the proximity to Interstate 280. The .89 acre lot of the home which was targeted is bounded on the back side by an I-280 Interstate exchange.

The mayor says: no prosecution. Would a person of modest means be treated differently? The home is valued at 1 million dollars on a .89 acre lot.

The homeowner needs more range time.

Soros' pimp for a DA: "Why did you fire the gun?"

Homeowner: "I didn't mean to. It went off by accident. I didn't realize my finger was on the trigger."

He'd skate either way.

The home owner is lucky he missed. I bet he would have serious legal problems otherwise.

At least put a couple holes in their vehicle for easy identification.

That makes it a modest suburban home, especially on a lot adjoining an interstate highway.

It was a stolen vehicle. Some poor innocent bastard will get his car back and have to fix the bullet holes. It sounds expensive.

Too bad the homeowner did not put a couple of holes in the thieves, for easy identification.

Inaccurate headline at source.

The homeowner shot at a BURGLAR in his home, who is hypothesized to have been looking for a key fob.

The speculation by Dean is unusual.

It’s a shame the homeowner didn’t have a 12 gauge...

Yes. Clorox would not get out all of the stains. He would have to use a better solvent. In the meantime, if he can’t shoot any better than that with a handgun, he should get a shotgun.

That would have netted him charges (NJ, after all).

It is about 3,370 square feet on Zillow, valued at 1 million.

Very nice neighborhood. I would say upper middle class.

The speculation is from "officials". The speculation is mentioned as such in the opinion at the end of the article.

In my neighborhood a stranger in your house in the middle of the night without your permission is also called a “target”

Democrats want to make the defense a crime. They want the underclass to waltz right in and take whatever they want from their “oppressors”.

A “million” dollar home in that section of NJ is probably a 1500 sq.ft. Cape that you wouldn’t give a second look at.

NJ home prices are insaine along with the property tax (guy is probably paying $20,000+ a year.

Bet any amount that homeowner missed on purpose. It's New Jersey, where the Communist government officials violate citizens' rights every day.

The homeowner knew that shooting a Son of Obama would mean criminal charges and a mob of Leftists.

These laws need to change to where the crimes of any de facto ward of the state incur aiding and abetting charges to the nearest Democrat politician.

“”Officials said the burglary suspect was looking for a key fob to steal a BMW parked in the resident’s garage.””

Note to self, secure the fob and DO NOT place it where it’s convenient to grab on the way out the door...

Look at post 12. Zillow lists it as 3,371 square feet on a .89 acre lot, valued at 1 million.
