Karen Garner, 73, only weighs 80 pounds but she was manhandled and body-slammed by police officers, causing her to fracture her elbow and dislocate her arm.
Officers Austin Hopp and Daria Jalali arrested Garner on June 26, 2020 after she walked out of a Walmart with a candy bar, a can of Pepsi and a t-shirt without paying.
Walmart recovered the items and did not lose any money.
Police officer Hopp is seen approaching a visibly confused Garner as she was walking home from Walmart by herself.
Moments later, the officer slams Garner to the ground and cuffs her as she screams, “I’m going home!”
VIDEO (disturbing content):
Attorney Sarah Schielke on Monday filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of the Garner family nearly one year after the violent arrest.
Colorado prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into the two officers and their supervisor after video of the arrest went viral on social media and sparked outrage.
New video released by the attorney for Karen Garner’s family shows officers laughing and fist-bumping over video of Garner sitting in her cell crying in pain from her injuries.
‘Ready for the pop?’ Hopp said referring to Garner’s arm dislocating.
When an unnamed officer asked, “What popped?” Hopp replied: “I think it was her shoulder.”
“I can’t believe I threw a 73-year-old on the ground,” Hopp said.

No mask.
She’s lucky that her fellow shoppers didn’t attack her before the police could even get there..
In my Texas Town she would have been issued a citation. No arrest.
It was obvious she was cognitively impaired. Anyone who finds the jocular demeanor of the cops recounting their arrest of the woman, seek help. You are not a person of good will.
Dementia .....I know I know ....headlines are enough...I do it too
But this one ....well....it’s different
I know u to be a good poster
Good question, but I assume it wouldn’t be difficult for a professional LEO with all the expensive training they receive which affords the reputation of being “expert” witnesses. Every court of law in the USA gives more weight to an officer’s testimony than a witness, victim of the accused be base of q LEOs supposed exerpert observational skills. The job of law enforcement is to serve and protect the citizens and they clearly did not do so in this instance. If the job is too tough for them, I suggest they learn to code.
The cops are on camera reviewing the footage of her being taken down and laughing at how loudly her shoulder pops when they dislocated it. Har har har! Sadistic he-men beat up an old woman and enjoyed it very much. Defend it if you will, I cannot.
HG
I found you a buddy
He’s lack your wit....maybe you can give him some lessons....you are funny I ain’t gonna lie....in a bad way....but funny nonetheless
But, I didn't see either officer laughing about her injuries and they certainly had a right to detain her.
What should be done with older women who have shoplifted, in your opinion? What should have happened here?
“body-slammed”
That’s a very dangerous practice.
A skillful police officer would have called a relative, found out what was wrong ( dementia) and would have issued her an appearance notice for misdemeanor theft and taken her home.
Police procedure is very strict these days.
The first officer went straight to the mat with her. He must have been wound up.
A male police officer should never man handle an old lady unless she is armed or about to put herself or someone else in danger.
You will have to be on your best behaviour from now on.
The police officers should have been more patient. I have little patience for shop lifters, too. A simple quiz, “what’s five times ten times ten?” (500), would give the police more patience with demented people.
When my relative started having dementia, the doctor would ask, “Who were the last five presidents?” and “add to thirty in threes”. (Three plus three is six, plus three is nine...)
Then you didn’t see the video of the cops at the stAtion house posted today. Watch it.
Really? What do you think?
You can spend as much time and effort as you wish defending the indefensible but it won’t hold water and only makes you look foolish.
This wasn’t some irate person from the ghetto with a long list of felonies and bad attitude. It was a 73 years old, mentally challenged and physically weak woman and should have been relatively easy for the cop to recognize that and physically detain her without body slamming her.
I think the problem the is the cop was enraged because he suffers from a “god complex” fueled by steroids and she failed to bow his “Ah Thor Aty” and lost control of his temper.
But hey, it didn’t happen to you or your elderly mother, so it’s cool I guess.
I guess I'm wasting my breath, it seems you think that if she broke a law than anything goes. We'll just have to disagree.
A lot of Americans couldn’t do that math!
More likely what year is it. Who is president. Who is your senator. What year was your child born. I heard doctors asking this.
Agreed. Excellent point.
