Karen Garner, 73, only weighs 80 pounds but she was manhandled and body-slammed by police officers, causing her to fracture her elbow and dislocate her arm.
Officers Austin Hopp and Daria Jalali arrested Garner on June 26, 2020 after she walked out of a Walmart with a candy bar, a can of Pepsi and a t-shirt without paying.
Walmart recovered the items and did not lose any money.
Police officer Hopp is seen approaching a visibly confused Garner as she was walking home from Walmart by herself.
Moments later, the officer slams Garner to the ground and cuffs her as she screams, “I’m going home!”
VIDEO (disturbing content):
Attorney Sarah Schielke on Monday filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of the Garner family nearly one year after the violent arrest.
Colorado prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into the two officers and their supervisor after video of the arrest went viral on social media and sparked outrage.
New video released by the attorney for Karen Garner’s family shows officers laughing and fist-bumping over video of Garner sitting in her cell crying in pain from her injuries.
‘Ready for the pop?’ Hopp said referring to Garner’s arm dislocating.
When an unnamed officer asked, “What popped?” Hopp replied: “I think it was her shoulder.”
“I can’t believe I threw a 73-year-old on the ground,” Hopp said.

He is probably too busy elsewhere, scolding bloggers and imploring them to “get a job.”
That was very, very hard to watch........Unbelievable!
My buddy was one of the good ones. Faithful Christian conservative black fellow. He still has friends in the PD who can’t wait to get out. When I asked him how he copes with what is happening in our country and the inside knowledge of police work, he just says “it’s in God’s hands.”
My other bud at work was with the Capitol Police for years and was on the swat team. Same type of stories.
My uncle just retired from the DEA after a long career: same type of stories but much, much worse as far as abuse of power. If the general public knew what really was going on behind the scenes, we’d have a revolution today.
“I’m sick and tired of people getting softer on crime at every turn these days and opposing police.....I will proudly defend the police....she is a thief...and she took ‘merchandise’ she didn’t pay for...that is theft. It doesn’t matter if YOU see it as junk or does it lessen her crime.
Yes..you’re wasting your breath defending criminal activity with me.”
And when it’s the police committing criminal activity? See the issue? You defend the abusers of power over we the people—you are a snake and you don’t even know it.
Whe the crap hit’s the fan (and it will), snakes like you will turn on patriots in a minute you Benedict Arnold POS.
You obviously didn’t read the article. The woman is demented.
She should not be living alone. Cops throwing anyone to the ground over shoplifting should not be working as police.
Police need to be trained on what dementia looks like.
These cops are disgusting. Note, I didn’t say “all cops.” These specific cops should not be on the streets.
Did she point a gun at the cops? Did she go after them with a knife? Did she pop the can of soda and spray the cops?
No, but she might have.
Good for the cops, in a split second they stopped a serious crime that might have happened. /s
You’ll notice there is always one on every thread.
I don't mind that. Bloggers deserve a certain amount of flogging here. He was in rare form on the previous thread though. It was obvious that it was just trolling for attention. I learned a long time ago that you don't feed the trolls. It just encourages them.
My mother died of dementia. She was a good loving woman. When she was diagnosed she had bouts of anger, saw things that weren’t there. Nothing so heartbreaking. Dementia patients can break loose once in a while. You can see here that after the Walmart thing, she was just walking down the road picking wildflowers. Her attention already had moved to something else. That happens until they finally sleep all the time and become catatonic.
We don’t know about her family, but there was no excuse to hurt that woman, laugh at her injuries, lie about those injuries.
I would guess maybe Walmart might have called cops to escort her home, not throw her around dislocating her shoulder and breaking a bone.
I like good cops who are good people but there are some who aren’t fit for the job.
“It doesn’t matter, they escalated the force way to far and too quickly. An elderly lady against these young, strong officers? Completely out of proportion.”
Yes, George Floyd was treated better early on.
Your defense of unnecessary police brutality is mind boggling. I get the feeling you'd be okay with them just shooting her to save everyone the trouble of a trial.
All I can say is wow, I hope you are not in law enforcement.
They even didn’t give verbal reasoning with this woman a chance. It was like 10 seconds into the encounter that they got severely physical.
Dementia isn’t really a defense. Even those people can hurt you and others.
If an LEO cannot restrain an 83 lbs. 73 year-old woman in poor physical condition with dementia without body slamming her, then he’s in the wrong profession and should be flipping burgers at McDonald’s.
I’m gonna play both sides of the coin on this.
look, on hand we all watch countless car crash compilation videos on youtube along with all sorts of other videos of similar style—8 minutes of forklift drivers crashing shelves at work. In many of these crashes and accidents people are getting killed, maimed, fired or whatever. yet we all watch them again (these videos have millions of views) and we laugh or jaw-drop at many of them.
So some cops watching some footage of a “wild” arrest doesnt really bother me sooooo much, as wrong as it may be.
I still am a full fledged LEO supporter and want them all to come home safe to their families at the end of their shifts, as they should. And yeah, sometimes they will make some bad judgment calls—everyone does. We don’t see the videos where their good judgment or actions helped deescalate situations—because they are usually boring to watch.
Now on the other hand, their has been a chronic problem of the “big dick” attitude among many LEO’s for many years. My brother in law was a NYPD cop and yeah, he was your stereotypical arrogant cop.
part of the problem is the politicization of the departments—using them as revenue sources and encouraging them to make their numbers (tickets/arrests etc....)
The prosecutors need work to you know!
And the attitude of the BOP officers is appalling—just watch Larry Lawtons youtube videos.
Yes, people should cooperate with LEO when confronted, but that doesnt give cops the right to go busting into homes or purposefully trying to make people into criminals.
Yes, it is a crock of BS when cops set up speed traps in these areas with ridiculously slow speed limits for no other reason then to make money for the town. You are not fighting crime in any way whatsoever—you are being a prick. and you all know what I’m talking about!
I honestly don’t know what the solution is but there is something seriously wrong with the entire justice system in general, which the police are generally a branch of to some extent. Theres a lot of change that needs to be done.
Was this woman wrong? 100%
should she have been treated like that? not at all
could we do better? 100%
can we always get it right? nope, but we can try to do our best.
In todays climate folks, just arm yourselves and do your best to stay out of trouble. And be prepared because with the clowns running this country right now, and their chink puppet masters—things will get uglier before they get better again.
“Yes..you’re wasting your breath defending criminal activity with me...”
What’s the old saying about arguing with a fool? Don’t waste your time and energy arguing with caww. He/she is from the same mold as Hummblegunner. Angry and bitter to the core.
I’ll agree with your core premise, but this woman was in INCREDIBLE shape for 73. The vigorous strides she was taking puts a lot of 55-year-olds to shame. And the dementia angle is a non-starter. Any dementia she had was relatively mild, and there is no way a police officer could know this.
I’ve been there as a cop. I’d have followed her a few dozen yards if she did not stop, put a gentle hand on her arm, and led her back to the patrol vehicle, using “verbal judo” in the entire process. I’ve de-escalated dozens of high tension encounters like this. Some officers just see themselves as a hammer, and the entire world as a nail. Those guys shouldn’t be in law enforcement.
Agreed.👍
“… That was very, very hard to watch........Unbelievable!…”
Agreed! Not all those videos were posted in the GP article. I want everyone here defending those cops to see this. And I’m extremely pro police! But there are bad eggs in every position and that poor demented woman wasn’t a threat to warrant that treatment.
“She has dementia.”
That’s a Monday quarterback call. No one knows what dementia looks like. She had enough intelligence to want to go home, and was walking, tried to escape, and resisted arrest physically trying to kick the cop. That is not a sign of the dementia trying to be portrayed. Her age is nothing. People steal at all ages. It is one of those unfortunate situations that require certain actions for the protection of the cop and the perp. If she hadn’t have struggled she wouldn’t have been restrained. If she hadn’t had to be restrained, she wouldn’t have had harm to her. She is just as responsible for the problem as the cop, in my mind more. And whether the cop could possibly even know of her illness and her not displaying anything to support it as she can’t, has nothing to do with the case.
