Wednesday News Roundup: Charles Barkley is Right About American Society
dbdailyupdate ^ | David Blackmon

To quote Charles Barkley, “most white people and black people are great people.” That describes 95% of the American public.

Sadly, too many of our politicians come from the other 5%, and that dynamic also goes beyond the political class into the social and traditional media class.

It’s the 5% who are the loudest, most obnoxious and most divisive users of Twitter and Facebook. CNN and MSNBC award platforms to divisive hucksters and buffoons like Don Lemon and Joe Scarborough and Chris Cuomo and Al Sharpton because they know those are the people who will regularly say outrageous and divisive things that attract viewers to their shows and clicks on their websites.

That’s exactly what I was gonna say. He’s not always right but he’s right more often that many (most?) sports/showbiz people.

While some of what he’s saying is undeniable, he’s essentially concluding ‘a pox on all your (political) houses.’ That is wrong and wholly unsupported by the facts.

There is only one party that trades in identity politics. It’s not the Republicans dividing people into groups. Barkely is either too obtuse to understand it or too cowardly to say it out loud.

He is right. The government politicizes race and uses it to attempt to separate blacks and whites. If they did what Trump did and try to create jobs for everyone and attempt to make things even across the board and stay out of it and leave people alone they will get along. That 5% will never be happy and nothing you do is going to change it.

Does Senator 47% ring any bells?

Barkley is from Leeds, AL. Despite being rich and famous he still has some country in him. His BS detector is highly accurate.

Remember, we’re talking about identity politics, not economic realities.

When Romney said: ‘47% of the country doesn’t pay income taxes,’ that wasn’t a statement about racial, ethnic or gender divisions. That was a statement on the unsustainability of our country’s finances - an economic reality - and arguably the only comment that ever came out Romney’s mouth that wasn’t absurd...notable that he said it in private, not public.

Who was Romney’s audience when he made that comment? Would he have made a similar comment to them about carried interest? Not in a million years. Divide and conquer. Chuck is spot on.

I’m not sure I see the analog. Why would Romney make the comment about hedge fund managers?

I think you might be confused with respect to what carried interest is. Whatever you think of the preferential tax treatment of income generated by private equity limited liability partnerships, those managers all pay federal income tax on that money. How much? 23.8%, 20% capital gains and 3.8% on the management fee.

Hedge fund managers are not part of the 47%. Even at the reduced 23.8% rate (relative to the tax rate of regular salary income), that is almost exactly the same rate as the average tax filer pays.

“If they did what Trump did and try to create jobs for everyone and attempt to make things even across the board”

Trump’s 500 BILLION dollar plan for blacks only.

Oh, I’m not confused. Romney disparaged half of Americans at a donor event. I guarantee you he did not complain about the tax loopholes he utilizes for himself to that audience of his peers. Divide and conquer. Barkley is right over the target.

Ray Charles, like every other decent, respectable,American knew that while we live in an imperfect country populated entirely by imperfect people this country is just about the best you’ll find anywhere on this planet.

No, you’re definitely confused.

Recognizing the mathematical certainty of economic reality ≠ Identity politics

Math isn’t racist, sexist or nationalistic.

Romney jumped out in front of the BLM parade to pretend he was leading.

Interestingly, Romney was not riffing about the 47% when he jumped in front of a BLM parade last summer. Now why would that be? Somebody is “confused” here and it ain’t me.
