Of course, nothing comes close to the cost of a single shell used for the cannon originally designed for the U.S. Navy’s USS Zumwalt, which came in at an estimated $800,000 each and made the gun too expensive to operate. However, there still some are calibers that are so expensive that shooters may want to think twice before ever squeezing the trigger. When shooting these rounds you can expect that it will be a costly day at the range. (Note: many of the prices below could be much higher due to what seem like regional price increases due to the ammo shortage the U.S. is seeing.)

Every round I shot was extraordinarily expensive this weekend but, worth every penny

9mm 124gr hardball I bought less than a year ago was $280 for 1K rounds, shipped.
Hornady 208gr 300BLK SS A-Max, which I thought was steep at a buck a around is now $4.25 per shot.
Crazy. And not in a good way.

I just paid $300 + tax for a case of 9mm 115 gr target ammo. 2 boxes out the door, $636. In 2019, I was buying buckets of 350 rds for $89 for the same spec ammo.

Any non-military caliber will be expensive - if you can even find them. For instance, calibers like .38 Special and .380 Auto are ridiculous.

I used to pressure test housings for an ROV using
a modified round for a 16” gun at the NPS in Monterey.

Would love it if you could share where you’re getting 9mm for $300 a case / 1000.

$1.85 / round for 30-06 Garand ammo.
And I got a good deal.
I’ll use as few as possible to set the sights, then remember that every squeeze of the trigger costs $1.85.
I always thought joining a bowling league would be cheaper.
But not as much fun.

Lucky me! I recently opened a stored box and found three boxes of Federal .22, 500 count each, in it! I must have bought them back in the 1980s.
And for years in the 2008-now I could not find .22s.

I remember buying caseloads in 2002, by the pallet, of 5.56mm NATO for 7¢/rnd, and .308 (7.62x51) for 14-16¢/rnd, and .45ACP for 18¢/rnd. I still have some of those receipts in the firearms' files. It was shipped by common carrier to my business, I'd unload with a forklift and Family and friends would divvy it up with me. Long gone day and years...
