I believe you are correct. I do not believe a newly elected POTUS is expected to give a SotU. They do give an address to Congress but it’s not the laundry list the SotU is.
C’mon man the guy doesn’t know what planet he’s on. If this was Trump the press would be incensed about it.

Richard Nixon was elected in 1968 and was inaugurated in 1969; he did not give his first SOTU until 1970.
I suspect a bit more research will show the same with the others (Carter elected 1976; inaugurated 1977, first SOTU 1978).
Normally the outgoing President gives a SOTU address just before leaving office. Trump did not do that.

That sounds right. In the first year in office, the address tends to be later and it is not a State of the Union.
Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I wasn’t going to say anything.

He’ll do it remotely because of Covid and domestic terrorism and stuff. And the tape will be heavily edited before it’s released. And the media will love it.
Frankly I do not understand a brand-new having a SOTU.
I’m guessing while the inaugural time was moved far back, the SOTU stayed the same. It would make more sense for the last pres to give a SOTU at the end.
Biden: Frankly, I don’t even know what state I am in and DC is not yet a state, so I can’t tell folks about the state I’m in yet. Maybe the state of confusion, ha ha. And there isn’t any “union” to join as a President.
