A single Israeli armored brigade with less than 100 tanks held out for four days against a Syrian infantry division equipped with more than 1,400 tanks including some 400 T-62s, the most modern Soviet tank in the field at that time. Unable to call in effective air support, the Israelis dug in and fought like the future of their country depended on it. Nearly the entire Israeli tank force was destroyed and the defenders were on the verge of collapse but as reinforcements finally arrived, the Syrians withdrew – not knowing how close they came to victory. Instead, they suffered a costly defeat, losing some 500 vehicles including around 250 of their newest tanks.

Nah, dwarfed by eastern front stuff. As a matter of fact, if you take the eastern front out of WWII and set it on its own, it is the greatest human conflict of all time. The fighting on the eastern front was of antitanic scale.

Mr. GG2 was on the Golan Heights with the IDF as a guest of the Israeli government when the first rockets started coming over. They handed him an AK47 and asked him if he knew how to use it. He said yes so they told him to get into a hole and watch a nearby wire and kill anything that tried to cross. They came back for him 24 hours later. When it was all over he walked down off the heights with the army and past all the burnt out tanks with dead Syrians hanging out.
It is amazing to me the number of people here who want to chase away anyone new, who doesn’t follow “their” rules.
I disagree. The tank battles of North Africa, the Italian Campaign, the hedgerow fighting in Normandy and the Ardennes in 18944 were far large the the Eastern Front.
Kursk lasted two days. The Bugle went on for eight weeks.

I apologize, I did not mean to come across as a smarter than you type comment. When I first delved into the eastern front I was shocked by what I read, I had no idea of the scale. History seems to gloss over the eastern front, maybe because very few lived to tell the tale, and maybe because it truly is a bad guy vs bad guy story.
Wow, he was smack dab in the middle of history there. Bet he has a few more crazy stories up his sleeve.
