My grandparents’ story is somewhat similar. In their case there were rumors that the Czar’s horse-men were going to kill everyone in the village.
Some people had “normalcy bias” and laughed at the “crazy conspiracy theories”.
Some people were “paranoid” and “fearful” and fled the village—all the way across Europe and to the United States where they started with nothing but the clothes on their back.
The “normal” folks got slaughtered.
The “paranoid” folks lived to have children and grand-children, and that is why I am alive today—and a paranoid conspiracy theorist!

Rod Dreher has long been an “off the grid” type...and it comes across as charmingly old-fashioned that he actually thinks anybody now is or can be “off the grid.”
Plus, “they” already know so much about you - and your family, your friends, probably your dog’s veterinarian - that thinking you’re going to erase or hide your identity is extremely naive.
The point is that there’s probably no way you can escape surveillance and nowhere you can go. So the only option is to fight back.
Go public with every abuse they commit, sue when you can, insist on maintaining a political presence (I love Pres. Trump’s new office!), try to stay in touch with like minded people, and be prepared to spend the rest of your life fighting for your legal rights. At some point, the tide will turn because it always turns in favor of freedom.
But thinking you can run away and erase yourself from their databases is futile with modern technology.
All of these things have both good uses and bad uses. The problem was that we didn’t halt the bad uses in time, and some of them were also snuck in under false pretenses (security, etc.), and now they’re established. So we have to figure out how to deal with this.
That said, there is one thing that I avoid, which is enabling electronic listening on phones and computers (Alexa, etc.) - or even on newer electronic kitchen appliances. However, they’re probably listening anyway, so you should just assume that. I simply don’t like having them chime in unexpectedly.
