“breakthrough infections”

*****

Interesting note, I recently watched the Hulu docudrama, Dopesick, which is about Purdue Pharma’s role in creating the American opioid crisis with their drug, Oxycontin.

Purdue either created the term, “breakthrough pain,” or at least took it from being a very marginal term to an industry standard concept.

The reason they did this is because reports from the field after Oxycontin’s launch were saying that the drug was not limiting pain for 12 hours, which was a significant problem for Purdue. The reason it was so significant is because the whole marketing approach was based on this 12 hour efficacy idea in that the drug was being prescribed for moderate pain as well as severe pain, because it was touted as having a less than 1% addiction rate due to it’s novel time release aspect.

So they pushed this “breakthrough pain” concept in that it is something different than regular pain, and the solution for it is . . . . increase the dose.

It’s a really good show, I’m surprised it is airing. One of the main themes of the show is how the FDA basically is in bed with Big Pharma, and takes direction from Big Pharma, primarily because all the FDA executives are looking to leave the FDA and get a high paying gig with the drug companies.

They just resurrected a tried and true term, “breakthrough cases,” to rationalizing the ineffective vaccine, and did it with no shame at all.

It must be painfully obvious to those in the industry who follow these things, but very few say anything about it, because they are focused on their careers.

It’s a systemic failure of our institutions to protect public health, and no doubt can be found in every industry that the government regulates.

The more money there is, the worse it is, I’m sure, and it gives me pause for thought on any issue with any controversy at all that I may have not paid so much attention to before.

I think “breakthrough “ as a modifier only clouds the facts. I got some oxy after my knee surgery. Didn’t do squat except make my head fuzzy.
