Osteopathic medical profession fights back after CNN, MSNBC mischaracterize DOs
The DO ^ | October 7, 2020 | Rose Raymond

Last week, when President Donald Trump reported his COVID-19 diagnosis and was subsequently hospitalized, White House Physician and Navy physician Sean Conley, DO, provided the press with updates on the president’s illness and treatment. The ensuing media spotlight on Dr. Conley resulted in unfortunate mischaracterizations of DOs that appeared, among other outlets, on CNN and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show.

Maddow questioned why President Trump’s care is overseen by an “osteopath” rather than an infectious disease specialist or an internist. CNN pundit Gloria Borger implied that, as an “osteopath,” Dr. Conley is not an “actual doctor.”

To set the record straight, the AOA deployed an aggressive communications response aimed at correcting inaccuracies in the media and combatting the spread of misinformation on social media by challenging those who made false statements about the profession to #GetItRight....

They would have preferred he be treated by some Third World doctor in a Venezuelan hospital.

My former cardiologist was an osteopath. Best doctor that I ever had. When he finally prescribed a satin, he started at the lowest dose and then cut that in half.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that the same people who would say Osteopaths are quacks are also the same people who have had midwives deliver their children? And I bet they go to chiropractors too.

CNN and MSNBC? Why does anyone still expect anything truthful or knowledgeable from them?

My husband and I noticed the DO on Dr. Conley’s jacket straightaway in the first press conference, and were glad that the President was under his care.

(We’ve been trying to find a DO here for years; but they are few and far between in our area...)

My doctor is a D.O., he loves cars and guns and despises DemocRATS. He also runs the ER at the local hospital. Best doctor I ever had!

Nope - incorrect. You win a trip to the Rachel Maddow studio audience.

Not just an ignorant slut but stupid. Nothing to work with.

DOs are very fine doctors trained to a standard that meets or exceeds that of the MD but both are acceptable and both are trained in all specialties.

I go to a DO now and went to an MD before that. I see no difference at all in how my health has been managed and consider it managed well.

The sloth, bias, prejudice, insanity and downright stupidity of the press is appalling. They are an insult to their education. Becoming a journalist has become just an alternative for low skilled and low intelligence people. I guess they get paid for something but I’ll be damned if I know why.

I agree.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t DO’s commissioned in the military at the same grade as MD’s?

I’m sure many are also the heads of various hospital departments and they get reimbursed by insurance companies at the same rates for the same procedures.

Typical Dem tactic. They see Conley as helping Trump, but they can’t just attack him. They have to attack everyone in the same field - just to discourage anyone else who might be inclined to make that mistake...

_____________

Probably as many who are DOs.

DOs are MDs plus. They have extra instruction in musculo-skeletal functioning and nutrition. Maybe more, but those are the 2 areas I am aware of.

One very liberal DO I am aware of is an internationally celebrated expert on Lyme’s who practices IV antibiotic therapy. This treatment is excoriated by main stream medicine, at the present, but his results are renowned and he is sought out due to a word-of-mouth network among sufferers.

Eh, no.

Honestly I don’t understand the real difference, though. But they do seem to stick to their own schools.

They claim to treat “the whole”. But any doctor should be doing that, who is a GP or internist or pediatrician, at least.

Don’t knock chiropractors. After years of progressively worsening symptoms, and a beavy of specialized doctors, i went to a chiropractor at the request of a friend.

He was also a holistic doctor. He examined me for 3 hours and took my entire medical history going back to my parents.

Turns out all my pain, swollen joints, migranes, chronic fatigue, vomiting, and digestive issues were food allergies! He changed my diet, gave me a system cleanse, and nearly a decade of agony disappeared after only 3 days on the new diet.

I went from partially disabled to fixing my roof over a weekend.

My doctor is an osteopath. The only difference between him and his fellows, and regular medical doctors, is that he as been taught joint manipulations in addition to medical theory. He’s never offered to use that extra skill on me or my husband. I don’t think it’s something they use much anymore. And he’s an excellent doctor.
