Many colleges had expanded decades ago due to the Vietnam War; many applicants weren’t interested in education, but draft deferments. Since the draft ended, tuitions have risen and borders lifted to counter declining enrollments.
My daughter went to Ole Miss it is the Disney of colleges but it is overbuilt and the town of Oxford wont last without the many drunk out of state college students.
They could make college free and have the government pay liberal teacher salaries but students still wont go.After high school education is done the kids are legally burnt out by then.
When I was a kid there were three people on the sanitation truck, which was a dump truck. A driver, a man on the ground that threw the cans into the back, a main in the back that dumped the can into the truck and threw the can back to the guy on the ground. They also went into the driveway so we didn’t have to take the cans to the street. Needless to say the cans didn’t have wheels.
I work for banks. I’ve been screaming that they are absolutely stuffed full of H1b Indians for a few years here when people want to keep saying “tech”. No, its not just tech. What really opened my eyes was seeing just how many the banks were employing right in the middle of the Great Recession. Even as millions of Americans were out of work - plenty who could have been productive employees of these banks, they still were claiming that they couldn’t find good workers here and “needed” hordes of H1bs.
We need to do what some of the Scandinavian countries have done. Sure you’ll get government assistance to get your college degree.....but ONLY if you study economically useful things like Math, Science, Engineering, Business, Finance, Accounting, Tech, Medicine, etc etc.
“Oh what’s that? You want to major in womyn’s studies or African studies or Sociology or Philosophy? Gosh, I hope you’ve got the money to pay for that because you’re not getting a nickel of public assistance/loans for it.”

OK, the Scandinavian colleges do not have liberal arts at all? And if they do, students who want to major in these “soft” courses are on their own in regards to tuition?
At least one of them (Denmark?) does that. They pay for all of a students college but limit the area of focus to useful things. If you want to study other subjects, you pay for it out of your own pocket.
They’re cutting sports. They need to cut bureaucracy.
Same here. Three guys and the actually picked up any litter along the way. Progress huh.
Not just Indians, but other Asians as well (including “Orientals”); I’ve posted since the 2007/2008 Recession that many financial firms in NYC simply traded their American workers for foreigners. When “Occupy Wall Street” was born, those American workers were demonstrating outside the offices of their Wall Street employers - and you could clearly see on the news the foreign replacements filing into the buildings behind them. I kid you not.
Some Americans who were able to find work after the layoffs realized that firms had simply swapped staffs to reset the wages and any perks related to seniority; at 50 or 60 years of age, they’d been reset with lower salaries and back to two weeks vacation...
It didn’t just happen in NYC. It happened here in Charlotte too. Yes, I’ve worked with H1bs from Turkey, Nigeria, a few from China (they’re the 2nd largest group) but all of them are dwarfed by the number of Indians. I kid you not...a good 1/4 of the building for any of the large banks here are H1b Indians. That’s not an exaggeration.
The trick is the banks will describe normal accounting, audit, etc type rolls as being technical. They will then claim that golly gee....there just aren’t Americans with those “technical” skills. Therefore they need to bring in another boatload of cheap H1b Indians.....
I wonder if down there the excuse was that those areas didn’t have a ready-made workforce in place when those jobs left the northeast for the southeast.
It seems any middle-aged or older American men I dealt with in NYC have been replaced by foreigners (in NYC offices); Mellon Bank has started sending its back office accounting work from Pittsburgh to India itself. They don’t even conceal it; when you receive emails they are sent when it is daytime in India, and the address of the sender is listed - definitely India.
