Trump Doesn’t Understand Today’s Suburbs — And Neither Do You
Politico ^ | 8/6/2020 | Zack Stanton

Posted on 08/09/2020 5:50:01 AM PDT by Sir Napsalot

In recent weeks, as President Donald Trump has returned time and again to the well-worn campaign playbook of white suburban fears — accusing Joe Biden of wanting to “abolish the suburbs,” promising to block low-income housing from being built, and protecting property values — the whole routine has elicited hand-wringing that Trump has America’s increasingly Democratic suburbs all wrong.

And that’s true, says Thomas Sugrue, director of metropolitan studies at New York University and a historian of race and city-suburb relations, Trump has “misread the reality of today’s suburbs.”

But the thing is, most of the rest of us have, too.

(snip)

“We’re seeing a suburban political divide quite different from the one that played out after World War II, when well-to-do, middle-class and even some working-class whites living in suburbia found common ground by looking through their rearview mirrors with horror at the cities they were fleeing,” says Sugrue. ....

We’re seeing the results of that play out in elections. “Trump supporters are more likely to be clustered in the outlying, more heavily white suburbs, and Democrats are making real inroads into the communities with more heterogeneity and better-off whites,” says Sugrue. “That’s a really big change.”

But there’s a whole lot more to the story. Just because certain suburbs are trending blue doesn’t exactly mean they’re woke to the racial politics that have long plagued suburbia. “White liberal suburbanites have played a critical role in the process of housing segregation and the resistance to low-income housing,” says Sugrue. “We can’t just think about it as torch-bearing angry white supremacists. If they were the only obstacles to equality in suburban housing, we would have come a lot farther than we have.”

People voting Democrats fleeing cities are like a swarm of locusts. They consume everything in their path, then flee to other places for their continuous destruction.

Maybe they also possess the pea brain of locusts, they never learn.

Nice try, Politico.

Too bad your collection of clowns didn’t take some actually hard courses back in high school. (Nope, you obviously didn’t even attend a real college.)

People in suburbs may soon have to make this choice. Scummy Leftists who flee the city and want to be safe in the suburbs will soon learn that bringing their poison with them will poison them in the suburbs too.

I expected nothing less from a Politico article.

The democrats always tell you what they don’t understand or fear by telling you what you don’t understand or should fear.

I dunno. Soccer moms are becoming armed because they are taking the threat of “taking it to the ‘burbs” seriously.

Exactly. I think Trump understands the suburbs fine. I live in them, and I do too.

biden doesn’t want to abolish the suburbs. He wants to continue what bammy started: turning them into mogadishu. After all, if people in downtown Chicago are getting killed, then why not those evil Whiteys in the suburbs? biden will just bring the inner city savagage to the suburbs, give them free housing, money on their EBT cards, and a free pass to rape, murder and steal from those evil Whiteys who go out to work to pay taxes that go on those EBT cards.

NO, we don’t want our daughters raped, our sons assaulted, old men knocked out in what the left calls a “game.”

Wow...you want to protect your nice community from government-mandated ghettoization, blight, and high crime and you are a “ torch-bearing angry white supremacist.”

I’d like to hear what else the author thinks about me, but I’ve got other things to do with my time. I have a pretty good idea where Politico stands in this issue — cede all of your local zoning refs to the federal government because they know best what your town should look like and who should live next door. If they had their way we’d all be welcoming millions of new uneducated neighbors from Africa, Mexico, Central America and MS-13. Just look at the MS-13 problem in the Maryland small towns for a taste of what the ComDems want us to all enjoy.

Yes. The amount of false stereotyping and false assumptions about reality in the sentences you quoted, are staggering.

Sugrue seems to seriously have no clue about reality.

“says Thomas Sugrue, director of metropolitan studies at New York University”

But the college professor who lives and teaches in NYC is an expert on the suburbs?

I've been an election judge in what might be called a neighborhood suburb of Pittsburgh for 7 years. Some argue we aren't, because it is a seat of a different county.

About 2% of our precinct are Black folks and I know most of them. Almost all of them will tell you that they moved here specifically to get away from other Blacks. You don't have to coax this information out of them, they volunteer it.

The president is not a king. Trump doesn’t have the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated. He doesn’t have the power to suspend taxes. (And Obama didn’t have the power to do DACA.) If anyone has any doubt where this is headed, just think what the next democrat president will do with the precedent that Trump is creating.

I lived in downtown Atlanta for 15 years.
Horror doesn’t begin to describe my feelings for it.

I guess I live in the sub-suburbs. Rural that is. Even the suburbs are too crowded for me. But there are conservatives in every liberal area.

We have a high end house in the suburbs and a cattle ranch in very rural se Oklahoma.. Yesterday I followed discussion among about 20 suburb neighbors on a little app. They were all trying to figure out how to safely, without hurting it, catch a skunk and move it to the wild so it could be let go. People think the suburbs are ready for this upcoming civil war. Trust me, they aren’t. Not even close.
