I always thought the umbrellas were used as a offensive weapon. Push forward with them having a sharp point on the end and hiding the identity of the pusher.

I never thought about a clothing change in the back packs. Thought they might be carrying water and food in them for midnight meals.

That’s another plus for umbrellas, they do make effective stealth weapons. They can also concentrate a surprisingly amount of force into a very small point for breaking glass windows.
