LOL.
People used to die of infectious disease in huge numbers and average life expectancy was about 40. If people in the Roman empire of Medieval Europe had actually understood HOW DISEASE WORKS they would have worn masks during epidemics.

"How the hell did did the human race survive centuries without wearing masks?" Man wouldn't have survived if he had today's worldwide travel by airlines and transportation by buses, cars and trains and no knowledge of microbiology.
