Nearly a dozen Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy vessels sailed out Wednesday to harass a collection of US Navy and Coast Guard vessels conducting operations in international waters, the US 5th Fleet said in a statement accompanied by a collection of photos.
At the time of the incident, the Navy expeditionary mobile base vessel USS Lewis B. Puller, the destroyer USS Paul Hamilton, and patrol ships USS Firebolt and USS Sirocco, together with the Coast Guard cutters USCGC Wrangell and USCGC Maui, were carrying out joint operations with Army AH-64E Apache attack helicopters in the Persian Gulf.
Trump decided to respond.
The President said he authorized the US Navy to destroy any Iranian gunboats if they hound American vessels.
I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea, the president said in a tweet on Wednesday, without providing more details.
Demonstrative video filmed during several military exercises shows how the US Navy would react to the famous Iranian fast-attack boats also known under the name fast attack crafts.
The reaction comes via the greetings of MK 38 M242 Bushmaster canons, M2 machine guns, and close-in weapon systems.

The US ships had been conducting military exercises in that section of the Persian Gulf.
Tensions have been elevated in the Persian Gulf region since last year after Iran attacked a Saudi oil installation, shot down a US surveillance drone, and boarded several international ships.

We need to vaporize one of these mosquito boats....that would be the end of this I suspect
I know little of Naval weapons but small boats should be able to carry devastating weapons something like RPGs or maybe something with a longer range.
On the other hand just about any warship should destroy those speed boats with ease.
Yes, the old hold your fire until fired upon really sucks.
I think I'd like to be the guy driving the remotely piloted target boat. Full throttle, crossing target, zig-zagging to change the range nearly continuously... I think I could make it very hard to hit with a deck gun.
Search youtube for Phalanx system.

I’m no expert, but that does not look like fine shooting. Looks like we threw a couple tons of ammo to get a couple of hits.
Why aren’t we using small, smart steerable missiles to home in on such a target? Do such things exist?
50k in ammo 100million dollar ship and takes them 5 min to sink a 5k boat.
I posted this because I am surprised of how they miss the target lol
If those Iranians carry something more consequential than a .50, like a torpedo or a short-range missile, the sailors need to gets hits in early.
On the other hand just about any warship should destroy those speed boats with ease.
One or two, yes.
200, not so much.

Bingo. I was really UNIMPRESSED as you saw in my post. That was pathetic.
As a lay person, I would think it would take ONE shot to sink a boat like that with today’s modern, smart weaponry. But I guess I’m over-estimating the capabilities of our weapons.
If the guys manning those gun are any indication of the Navy’s ability to destroy the fast attach boats, we are in trouble. Those guys put a lot of lead down range with little accuracy.
My only hope is that it's propaganda to convince the Iranians that they can attack a US warship with impunity.
You have to see this from the point of view of being on the small boat.
It’s the motion of the ocean. Roll pitch and yaw on both the target and the shooting vessels. It would be much easier to target their bases.
Not impressed. Needs just one YUGE explosion with nothing but a little debris left floating.
