6. The right to gainful employment.
Reminds me of the complaint, "The food was terrible, and the portions were small.
What's the point?
If you had been relieved of your rights, your firearms would be taken from you, the Internet would have been downed, and people outside of their homes would be shot on sight.
Thomas Jefferson had put it this way about temporary loss of constitutional protections versus troubled times.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen: but it is not the highest. the [sic] laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. to [sic] lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property & all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means [emphasis added]." Thomas Jefferson to John B. Colvin, 20 September 1810.
"Whatsoever is lawful in the Commonwealth or permitted to the subject in the ordinary way cannot be forbidden to him for religious uses; and whatsoever is prejudicial to the Commonwealth in their ordinary uses and, therefore, prohibited by the laws, ought not to be permitted to churches in their sacred rites. For instance, it is unlawful in the ordinary course of things or in a private house to murder a child; it should not be permitted any sect then to sacrifice children. It is ordinarily lawful (or temporarily lawful) to kill calves or lambs; they may, therefore, be religiously sacrificed. But if the good of the State required a temporary suspension of killing lambs, as during a siege, sacrifices of them may then be rightfully suspended also [emphasis added]. This is the true extent of toleration." Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Religion, 1776.
Insights welcome.
Send "Orange Man Bad" federal and state government Democrats and RINOs home in November!
MAGA, also KAGA! (Keep America Great Always!)
Supporting PDJT with a new patriot Congress and state governemnt leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping COVID-19 will effectively give fast-working Trump a third term in office imo.
So I can be slowly denied my rights till I have no more. That is fascism. I’ll pass!
If rights are shelvable then theyre not really unalienable. And if theyre not unalienable, then theyre an illusion and are cancellable by any tyrannous government.
When they take rights from you, you will have to fight an actual battle to get them back. This mess will be lifted by decree.
But, if you want to work yourself up into yet another lather, go right ahead.
“That being said, I think the level of excitement this time is merely self preservation on the part of political animals. Nobody want to be viewed as ‘not doing anything’”.
Exactly.
It’s not, It’s an opinion piece at PJ Media and per FR Guidelines must be excerpted.
It wasn’t really ‘news.’ Maybe General Chat? Either way, Rules is Rules for posting from some specific sources. :)
Temporarily cooperating with a public health directive, during an outbreak of an unknown virus, that may, or may not, also be a bio-weapon does not equate with loss of Civil Rights.
The problem is that it looks as though this is the first time that quarantine laws, with the threat of prosecution, have been applied to healthy people with no connection to the infected.
Make a sick person stay home - OK
Make a healthy person whose been around a sick person stay home - OK
Make a healthy person stay away from a sick person - OK
Make a healthy person with no know connection to anyone sick stay home - not OK
If they can make you stay home, or lose your livelihood for no reason other than you might get sick, what other reasons can they come up with to curtail your rights...for no reason?
Please address my comments of #23. Why would you refuse to cooperate with a government YOU empowered? Do you favor anarchy?
Bump
This is going to be the long lasting result of this event. Americans will slowly but surely be willing to give up their God given rights for all sorts of reasons, until one day, we will be just like the society described in the book ‘1984’.
Eventually, there will be a crisis every day of every month of every year forever and will be used as justification to take away our rights.
JoMa
Absolutely if it infringed on my rights. As stated in the Constitution, they are “god given” and not granted to me by the government.
The problem with the several "Make a..." entries is that people like yourself aren't sufficiently self disciplined to follow any of those. There is also the problem that sick people and carriers do not know they are spreading the virus until AFTER they have infected many others.
Are you mathematically and logically impaired?
That is why we need the guns.
“Your rights stop when you start causing harm to others, and in this very limited situation, certain normal activities cause harm to others.”
We had that conversation over dinner last night. We used dozens of examples and it’s d@mn HARD to quantify this stuff, as in where MY rights End and YOUR rights BEGIN.
Apply it to:
Drunk Driving
Abortion
States Rights
Gun Rights (Or any Amendment you’d care to choose)
Property Rights (Home Owner Associations!)
Education
Marriage laws
Welfare
Education
Workers Rights v. Employer Rights
Crime & Punishment (not the Novel, LOL!)
Blah, Blah, Blah...
It used to be much more cut and dry when we strictly followed our Constitution. One reason I’m so PROUD of all President Trump has accomplished for us in the Judiciary. If he does nothing else but concentrate on packing the courts with Constitution-Loving judges, he’ll have reversed decades of abuses to, ‘We The People’.
Incremental creep and overreach by Government at ALL levels is what keeps the love of Socialism alive in a mostly still FREE America.
