I used to do 1/48 scale Navy and Marine Corps aircraft models, and before Algore invented the internet, I used 'In Detail And Scale' and 'Colors And Markings' books for reference.

There was also a company that made very detailed decals, for just about any aircraft one could think of. Can't remember their name right now.
