No, a desire for mind alteration drove him to marijuana and later to heroin ... and I'm confident he used alcohol along the way, but again, I'll bet my bottom dollar FRC is not beating the drum for a return to Prohibition.
There are problems here, but marijuana criminalization has utterly failed as a solution, while creating problems of its own - primarily enrichment of violent criminals, boosting their motive and means for violence.
