‘Howdy, Modi’ event could be a milestone towards enmeshing Indian and US interests
The Times of India ^ | September 18, 2019

Posted on 09/19/2019 9:30:02 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

In a big moment for India-US relations, President Donald Trump has decided to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diaspora outreach event called ‘Howdy, Modi!’ in Houston, Texas. Trump also plans to address the 50,000-strong gathering along with Modi. This is a big win for Indian diplomacy. Coming at a time when Pakistan has tried to internationalise the Kashmir issue, Trump’s presence in Houston signals that Washington is in New Delhi’s corner. It also puts to rest the confusion over Trump’s previous statements on mediating in the Kashmir dispute. The Modi-Trump meet on the sidelines of the recent G7 summit in Biarritz appears to have put the mediation talk to rest.

What’s in it for Trump, who’s famously transactional? One factor is the Indian-American community which has become increasingly influential in US politics. Aiming for re-election next year, Trump could be eyeing this vote bank as insurance against any erosion in his core Republican vote base. Although 62% of Indian-Americans identify themselves as Democrats, Trump may be trying to woo them by showcasing relations with India. But those relations have developed some rough edges that need to be smoothed.

It is the differences on India-US trade that have been most disconcerting. Trump has railed against the bilateral trade deficit, ended India’s preferential trade status under the Generalized System of Preference programme, and even dragged New Delhi to WTO for alleged violation of global trade rules. But to make India-US ties durable and irreversible, these trade issues need to be sorted out. In this regard, it is welcome that New Delhi is working with Washington to address the latter’s concerns over price control on medical equipment such as stents and knee implants, apart from looking at ways to lower duties on American technology equipment and some farm products.

Don’t you think they think of us as wells they think of the Brits? During the cold war they sided too much with the Soviets. If it weren’t for the Chicoms they’d have no use for us. Pakistan is another story. They played us too so India may have a good reason for having a bone to pick with us.

Shame on Trump for embracing Indians in the US. This should instead be an an opportunity to round up and deport 50,000 Indians. Too bad there are millions of Indian IT workers in the US, and their families, that also need to go home. Boot them all and free these jobs up for US citizens.

Best way to *bleep* China over is to engage with India.

It reminds me of Nixon’s opening china, as a way to deleverage Russia’s influence in Asia. Same principle.

The indians in the US are highly educated, hard-working people who despise people on welfare and want more breaks for business.

Ideal Republicans.

Trump wooing them is the right approach for now and for the future

India has a love-hate relationship with the British - just as the USA had in the 1800s. It remembers the bad and the good, but mostly it see’s it as the past.

The USA is looked on fondly (except for Nixon - I’ll get to that in a minute) - they remember that it was the USA that pushed for Indian independence and that Eisenhower was a strong friend of India AND that the USA supported India in its 1965 war with China

However in 1971 Henry Kissinger threatened India during the Bangladeshi independence and also sent in a US aircraft carrier to threaten India. That was not looked on well and firmly pushed India into the Soviet camp.

Clinton with his sanctions on India didn’t help

But Bush changed that and now the relationship is of friends - not allies yet, but with no reason NOT to be - on nearly all matters their interests and ours overlap

You want to deport skilled workers who came here legally, work and pay into the system and don’t live off welfare? And create companies?

Sorry but 62% already self-identify as DemocRATS and with MASSIVE chain migration that percentage will only increase.

This is just the same globalist RINO vermin trying the same trick with Indians (62% vote Dem) as they tried with Hispanics.

The White Replacement/Genocide project continues apace.

Mike Lee of Utah tried to ramrod S. 386 through yesterday by unanimous consent. Don't know if he succeeded.

(Its sister bill already sailed through the House.)

“62% of Indian-Americans identify themselves as Democrats”

Groups can change over time. When it happens, it is often a rather sudden re-alignment. Blacks used to be the most solidly Republican demographic. In two waves (during their migration to Northern cities in the 20s and 30s, and then during the 60s) they became the most solidly Democratic demographic.

Not only can groups change, they are always changing.

One major issue in the lives of Indians, is the conflict between Hindus and muslims. Modi has made this a hallmark of his tenure - he is perhaps the most anti-islamic leader in modern Indian history.

The Democrats have positioned themselves as the Party of islam.

Yeah .... 62 % can become 75%. And, sadly, THAT is the direction it will almost certainly move.
