Parents, schools react to Trump rollback on school lunches

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Parents and schools are reacting to the Trump administration's rollback on school lunches.

School lunch menus will be remade nationwide. President Donald Trump rolled-back an Obama-era mandate that required schools to only serve whole-grains, along with more fresh fruits and vegetables. This change affects millions of children.

Cafeteria operators say the mandate made costs higher. But some parents here in Des Moines feel getting rid of the mandate is wrong, and they're not alone.

"I guess it's upsetting or annoying if we're not doing what's best for our kids," said Courtney Starbuck, a parent at Hubbell Elementary in Des Moines, adding that she relies on the school to provide her 7-year-old, Audrey, with a healthy meal. "The schools are just a place I can trust that my daughter is being well cared for, including her health and well-being and nutrition."

Starbuck is not alone. "I want my kids to be having healthy foods. I don't agree with it," Des Moines parent Jessica Styron said.

Des Moines Public schools serve 36,000 meals every day. In a move that surprised parents, the district announced it will continue to *honor the whole-grain mandate.

The food that was mandated by Michelle Obama to be served to the kids is either not being eaten, or just plain thrown away.

What did fat butt plug ugly Moochelle mandate for others as she wolfed down the double Big Mac's.

School lunch early 60s

2 slices of white
No mayo because it might go bad
A smear of yellow mustard on the bread
1 slice of bologna
1 slice of american cheese
Stick em together
Wrap with wax paper
Stick it in a brown paper bag with 1 small apple, a napkin, and maybe a small box of raisens.
If it was just after Halloween... 1 ration of candy.
3 cents for your carton of milk.

Or pb&j

This puts the pressure where it belongs, back at the local level. If these parents want the healthier meals, they can demand them. What I saw is a lot of food that didn’t get eaten.

The Feds shouldn’t be micro-managing local things like schools.

That lunch you pack must be within the guide lines the school requires.

What frosts me is families that get Food Stamps plus free breakfast and lunch for the kiddies. You'd think they'd have to use food stamps to pay for the school meals.

Funny situation a few years back..... It was at an elementary school where every student was given free breakfast and lunch. They weren't all poor. Some were driven to school in their folks' SUVs with breakfasts from McDs in bags. (the nearest McDs was a few miles away, and not in the direction they'd be going). When they got to the cafeteria, they had to take the free breakfast. They took the milk and juice, threw the rest away, and had their McDs breakfast!

They were complaining about the food when the mandate was put in place. Now they are complaining because it is being relaxed?

They never heard of brown bagging it? Today you can buy great lunch bags with all kinds of little containers for dips for vegetables, fruit etc. I don’t see why the government has to feed our children.

Exactly. When she can’t get up 15 minutes early to make your child a lunch it’s pretty pathetic

It’s pathetic that parents rely on Washington bureaucrats to decide what their kids should eat.

The woman is an idiot.

Two points.

1. They aren’t mandating that the food goes away. Keep serving Kale and other garbage if they choose.

2. The people currently selling the expensive whole grains, will likely reduce costs to not lose the contract. They could potentially get exactly the same thing at a lower price.

Someone mentioned up thread that they couldn’t afford to buy lunch, I was the same way! No money. PBJ and Bologna, ham on occasion was the lunch of Champions in the 70s! Packed lunch until probably the 10th grade and even then all the way until graduation on occasion.

Obama should never have been interfering in such a thing in the first place. He wasn’t emperor. Trump is trying to straighten it out and put it back in the lap of the locals where it belongs.

When Iowans stop dumping ethanol in our cars, I’ll start worrying about whether absent federal mandate they are dumping too many of their starchy grains into their kids at lunch.

And the more of that the government provides, the more the family structure is torn apart.
