Thyroid Health - for under-active thyroid.
I have had a lower functioning thyroid in the past, took two herb formulas described below (Kanchanar guggulu and Kaishore Guggulu), and it improved to normal functioning and I felt much better. I haven’t had a test for at least 6 years. I just ordered both herbs so I can start up again, and I also take Triphala guggulu regularly.
There are foods that are considered to help with thyroid, and I’ll post a list. Since I am a vegetarian, I don’t eat fish or eggs, but did eat a lot of seaweed for a while, got brazil nuts, and I use milk products.
I stopped seaweed because the only kind that’s really good - harvested in clean ocean water - is very expensive. I love nori but researched how it’s grown and much of it is NOT reliable.

While the cause of thyroid disorders is largely unknown, there is evidence that certain foods can aid in thyroid function. If you have hypothyroidism, here are five foods to add to your diet.
Roasted seaweed
Seaweed, such as kelp, nori, and wakame, are naturally rich in iodine—a trace element needed for normal thyroid function. Eat seaweed with sushi or get packaged seaweed snacks to toss in salads.
Salted nuts
Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, and hazelnuts are excellent sources of selenium, which helps support healthy thyroid function. Pack a small bag of assorted nuts to snack on throughout the day.
Baked fish
Fish is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and selenium, which both help decrease inflammation. Bake salmon, cod, sea bass, haddock, or perch for lunch or dinner to get a healthy dose of Omega-3s and selenium.
Dairy
Dairy products like yogurt, ice cream, and milk contain iodine. The thyroid needs iodine to prevent its glands from becoming enlarged—known as goiter. Treat yourself to a low-fat serving of frozen yogurt to get sufficient levels of iodine.
Fresh eggs
Eggs contain healthy amounts of both selenium and iodine. For the most health benefits, eat the whole egg, as the yolk holds most of the nutrients.
Ayurvedic Formulas for helping thyroid health
Kaishore Guggulu
This compound is commonly used to treat inflammatory types of arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, gout, and fibromyalgia. It helps to enhance metabolic function, preventing formation of ama (toxins from undigested/poorly digested food), and to regulate thyroid activity. [It has some more uses but I’m sticking to thyroid for now].
Kanchanar Guggulu
This formula contains herbs specific for clearing accumulations in the lymphatic and digestive systems. It helps to strengthen metabolic and eliminatory functions and is a key medicine in treating swollen lymph nodes in the neck, goiter, lymphatic and sinus congestion, cysts, fibroids and benign tumors.
[The above does not mention thyroid, but about 20 years ago I took it as I could find nothing else that looked helpful, and my low thyroid symptoms such as exhaustion, no appetite, hair falling, etc improved.]
Triphala Guggulu
This formulation is used to scrape away toxins and obstructions in the tissues and bodily channels. It enkindles the digestive fire in fat tissue, supports the metabolism and helps with obesity. It is helpful for boils, abscesses, allergies, malabsorption, high cholesterol, hyperglycemia, and many other conditions, including hypothyroidism.
I can post links to sources if anyone would like.
Since they are saying iodine is helpful for the thyroid, I might switch back to regular salt. Had bought some at the dollar store...said it did not supply iodide.
Thanks L.J.! No thyroid problems, but I am glad to know that I can get Selenium (among other things) from macadamia nuts rather than Brazil nuts. I do not care for the taste of Brazil nuts at all!
So...I take two thyroid prescrips...levo and another...have for years...do you think triphala would interfere, or maybe reduce need for them?
❤️
Yes please. How do you take this? Tea? Powder? Capsules? Dosage?
Great stuff, LJ!
Thank you!
I have always been low thyroid, cold natured, dry skin, etc. and am on armour but am always appreciative of hearing what works for others.
May God bless!
