Melania is Cinderella in Maxfield Parrish's Famous Painting (pic)

Not sure how a ragtag band of Deplorables deserves to have a First Lady of such intelligence, poise, kindness, and beauty as Melania.

It's been two weeks since we saw her lovely photos at the White House Dinner for evangelical leaders.

So I figured it was high time to start another Melania beauty thread.

So how about something different?  I ran across some lovely paintings by American painter Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966).

He is known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealized neo-classical imagery.  His career spanned fifty years and he was wildly successful selling prints of his work.

I put Melania in Parrish's lovely 1913 "Cinderella" painting, also known as "Enchantment".  Playing with this for a couple hours in GIMP, I hopefully honored Parrish's work and Melania's classic beauty.

Skin color is hard to match in GIMP work.  Luckily, the orginal has a saturated yellow and orange color making the matching job easier.

The toughest part was matching the texture of the original painting.  Hope I got the shadows right.  Here is the image of Melania I used:

Normally, I believe Melania’s beautify would add to any picture. This said, the person who did this adaptation could have done much, much better in the details. So it’s not Melania’s fault. Simply pasting a picture upon a picture doesn’t do Melania any justice.

Yes, we’ve certainly moved way up on the First Lady scale.

I love Maxfield Parrish, and I agree the First Lady is exemplary in her style, diplomacy and grace. However, when I think back to basic measurements of Commercial Figure Drawing, the Melania applied head is much too large and wide for that body. I salute the intent though, and it’s always good to educate others about painting masters of the past.

Agreed. It’s Andy Warholish. Talented, but not creative.

Lee, thanks for your encouraging words and applying your trained eye to this.

I compared the original to the Melania version and was surprised how much larger I had made Melania’s head and the neck I also needed change due to the original’s side and drawn slightly back angle.

Fortunately, the background of the head is fuzzy hair and sky I could made changes to make it more anatomically correct. So what you see now should be better.

I live near the University of Georgia and senior citizens of Georgia are allowed to attend classes for free in Georgia public universities. So I’m thinking of taking a course in painting so I can get some of this good training.

Melania has a much more refined style sense than this.

Parrish is all about reflection, color of light and shadow.

IMO, a 3/4 profile of Melania with the attending reflected golden light accentuating shadows would be a better choice.

Her face is too “flat” and lacks the drama of the wistful 3/4 profile.

Parrish was a master of the third dimension.

Give that a try, instead.

I have the White Rock Fairy pic which was my grandmothers, needs a refurbishing, it’s not the real thing like we originally thought (we assumed we were going to be millionaires till Sotheby’s told us it’s a copy). It sat in my garage for years so now I’m thinking of having it restored.

Good suggestion, Salamander.  My choice of Melania face was not as good as it could be.  Yes, Parrish is incredible in the use of color, shadow, and light.  Time to study and practice.
